A convicted criminal has been jailed for indecently assaulting an 11-year-old girl.
Ian Missing, 23, of Rectory Lane in Chelmsford, Essex, carried out the assault while doing his community service punishment at a primary school.
He had worked at the unnamed school as a gardener after being convicted of common assault on an adult last May.
At Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday he was sentenced to six months in prison after admitting indecent assault.
Missing, who was also banned from working with children for life, has already served 103 days in jail, leaving a total of 79 days.
The girl was not a pupil at the school and the attack, last October, did not take place on school premises.
'Community benefits'
At a news conference, the chief officer of Essex Probation Service, Mary Archer, said a review had been carried out and she defended the system of school placements for offenders.
She said: "We have done checks on all placements and other schools are continuing with placements.
"We don't have a lot of individual placements, but we do have some and the new arrangements we've made following this review means that we have all additional information available to us.
"Unpaid work in organisations is really important and the community benefits a great deal.
"We provide up to a million pounds worth of unpaid work and that's to the benefit of all sorts of organisations."
