i downloaded a 128kbps mp3 file last week, but my upon playback it sounds more like a 32kbps file!
therefore, is the a downloadable filter which can re-record it thru a type of wave converter which clips away the cloudy audio aspect?

as like in old days, when u pressed the dolby button the music played back clearer.

Nope, MP3 is a destructive compression format. The file willl never be any better than the original MP3.

As neil.b said what you've got is what you've got with an MP3 file, however have you tried using another application to play the file?

Many years ago I had a Sound Blaster Live! which came with MP3 player software and all MP3s sounded crap. I then installed WinAmp and they sounded much better (better codec?). Just a thought

BTW what dolby button made things clear? I only remember Dolby B and C on cassette decks which made things sound really dull

There are various applications which can filter background noise but they don't realy improve the quality of the recording.

It's worth trying to play the file through another application. The other option is to use a sound editor and just open the file and resave without any modifications. This might sound daft but I've had it work with a couple of tracks in the past.

have you checked the file properties? In Windows it can tell you the bitrate actually used.

in 1980's there used to be a standard button that cut out treble-hiss distortion.
