Does anyone know when the next major body style change is expected for the 911? Pls forgive my for my ignorance but I'm contemplating buying a 1999 Porsche 911 and I want to find out how long I'll have before it looks dated. Many thx in advance.

Hi Adam,
the one you are looking to buy is the 996 model which has already been superceded by the 997 model which was released in 2005. Try doing some searches in this forum.

Not dated surely? Classic - but not dated.

After the 996 and 997 one would expect the 998 to be along in a few years (although Porsche naming/numbering policy is by no means that straightforward or predictable!).

Anyway, the next shape will doubtless be evolution rather than revolution - the current cars still have distinct traces of the first ones from over 40 years ago in them.

I guess the 997 will be due a facelift in the next 2 years, but whenever Porsche bring out a new 911 or facelift an existing model the changes are more mechanical than visual.
I mean fans can tell the difference between 993/6/7 etc but in essence the shape of the car hasn't changed a great deal.
When I ran my 1998 C2 I added clear lights, carrera alloys etc just to keep it fresh looking. I would bet most people (ie people not as clued up as we are on here) would struggle to say what model/year it was.

How true! I would wager that most of us on here prefer the 997 style headlamps to the 996 'fried eggs', but a quick straw poll around the office suggests that a fair number of the rest of the world actually prefer the 996 style!

I prefer the fried egg 996 look to the 997.

To my mind, the oval lamps are synonomous with the raised front wings of all 911s up to the 993. My best memories of driving a 3.2 Carrera include watching the raised round front wings bob around and seek the path....My major 993 dislike were the 968 style front lights and recessed wings.

All in the eye of the beholder of course.

ah yes, glad to see you got that the right way round - the rear-engined slightly dowdy second child taking its styling clues from the immortal front-engined/water cooled perfect firstborn
