Anyone else signed up for this yet?
It's not exactly movies on demand, but there's a few reasonable films on there I haven't seen yet.
Having said that, I've been downloading Layer Cake for about 10 mins and its only 11% downloaded. Streaming would have been a better way to go methinks.

11% of a movie in 10 minutes and you're not happy?

If you start playing it now it will never catch up with itself, thats streaming practically (if the format allowed). The downside of streaming is chopiness due to data rates.

Expect numerous versions of this to come to market soon. The MSTV implementation of it is bloody clever...

Yeah. I signed up for it. Installed it. It updated itself, stopped working and destroyed my graphics card driver. It took a day and half of fiddling to return the Media PC to how it was. Its uninstall - didn't - or, at least, not completely and I had to get rid of it by hand - no easy feat.

During that I *did* download two movies. Which I haven't watched yet apart from the first few minutes - in each case confirming that the level of compression was a little high.

So.

1) I will be waiting until all the teething troubles have been ironed out and their installation no longer buggers machines.

2) I will be waiting until they offer the movies for download at DVD compression. A movie is currently around 1GB. It needs to be about 3GB.

3) I will be waiting until I can have faster broadband at my house to make this worth it. 2MB is about the minimum that gives an acceptable download time. I only have 512k. 8MB would make it properly useable.

4) If you have a Sky+ box what is the point? Its only the same movies on offer - with no 30 day time bomb. They first release the film for download at the same time they broadcast it for the first time - so why not just get Sky+ to pick it up.

In the end, though, it may be quite a good service. Just not yet.

Oh - and the movies are protected by DRM so they can only be played on the machine they're downloaded with. This is a PITA. I want to download 'em onto my server and then watch 'em on my Media PC in the lounge...

from the Sky website... "Download times are dependant on your internet connection type/speed, internet conditions and the size of the chosen video. As an example, with a 1MB connection, the download will take approximately the same time as the length of the movie or sports video itself. And of course, the quicker your connection, the less time it will take to download." So stating the bleeding obvious (faster connection = faster download) but how big's your pipe? (oo-er)
