I saw an ad last night from the (think it was Strathclyde pratnership) featuring a people carrier being removed from a river, and as the car emerges from the depths, a baby on board sticker is seen on the window. How dramatic! The ad finished by stating that a speeding conviction could be the least of your worries.

I just wondered what the ASA would think of this, as it implied that speeding was the biggest killer on our roads. I can't remeber specifics, but will try and catch it again tonight to see what it actually said.
All I remember is seeing it and it making my blood boil as it was obviously lies and over dramatised nonsense!

Anyone else seen it?

Yeah, that is worrying. Usually scottish public service announcements are quite good and apply to everyday circumstances (well when I worked up on the borders in 2001 they did)... even recently saw grants for lorry driver training in scotland for better road safety (again, don't know who's eligible, but haven't seen any down here)...

Sounds like in the advert they should put "death by driving into a river", "death by ignoring the corner", "death by ignorance of the prevailing conditions", "death by driving a lardy minibus that understeers into rivers"

Sorry if anyone has had relatives or friends in a similar crash, but we all know accidents are not caused by speed alone. We need a catalyst which makes the speed innapropriate, and that is what we need to address!

How about 'death by re-surfaced road using slippery tarmac'?

Didn't I read somewhere - may have been on here - that someone complained to the ASA regarding an advert on the back of bus showing 4 gravestones and a speed kills message and had their complaint upheld.

Don't know if it is the ASA for TV adverts, may be the IBA - might be worth trying to get a video of it though.

Yep, it was a PH member

It is the ASA for adverts, I was unsuccessful with one complaint

How can they get such utter nonsense passed and accepted as an appropriate, truthfull advert in the first place? I don't know anything about the process, does anyone know who is responsible for deeming their advert broadcastable?
where's Big fat f'er... set to work on this one mate

I wonder how many people think "yes I must obey all speed limits" after seeing the advert? Are people that stupid, I guess some are.

I think the SCP's place these adverts to justify their actions and existence, not to the public but to themselves.

There you go Make a complaint. Keep it factual and there's a good chance you'll get the advert removed You merely need to demonstrate that speed isn't the reason for that crash etc. The advert is misleading and that's not allowed.

Hello Peter,
I have found four utterly offensive ads from this organisation and have complained to them and ASA. One of them uses a coffin on a trestle, another an x-ray of a broken bone. I have asked them to supply me with the details of the RTA that the bone came from and the fatality that presumably resides within the coffin.
If they can't verify that these are real, they are breaking the law.
I have also complained about their reference to "safety" cameras.
They are absolutely abd definitively speed cameras; that is all they do, detect a vehicle's speed. It is quite clearly misrepresentation to imply that they have another use.
This is public money they are using for this fiasco: OUR public money.

A good one. You never know, but I bet it happens and speed is blamed!

We have an SCP advert on Real Radio which ends:

"It's not an accident if you're speeding"

ahhh.. so if I have an accident at 29mph... is IS an accident?

T***S!

I've heard that. If you run over someone with your eyes closed make sure its at 29mph, that way you can claim its an accident!

Yay, so now I can drive at 60mph in a national limit in thick fog and run someone off the road. It was an accident, see, the SCP says so!

If that wouldn't work in court to get you off, then it must be against advertising standards!

There's an explanation for this - well one of two in my opinion...

(a) They're idiots or
(b) They're trying the only way they can to justify their business

or may a third - both are true!

It all comes back to this obsession with speed, I have seen a bad driver that was well within the limit cause a crash by pulling into a lane without looking, only to get out of their car shaking their head at the driver that crashed into them, saying that they were going too fast!!!! its the dickheads like that we need to drive off our roads, not us... Just think, if there were less old farts and do-gooders on the roads, there would be more room for us to use the roads, and drive at normal speeds, maybe there would be less accidents too, im not kidding..

The billboards are all over the place just now. They actually upset me greatly as it shows how little road safety actually means to our Executive.

complain.

It's easy and there's a link further up the thread. It will take just five minutes of your time. I would, but living in East Anglia I would get rumbled pretty quickly!

First off I HATE CAMERAS!!, but I think that the adverts are only trying to stir up debate and to get people to think about their driving and the possible consequences of getting it wrong. I think in some way they are promoting healthy debate (like here).

That said I do wish the money would have been spent in other areas of the roads infrastrucure.

Complaint is away.

My biggest concern with this kind of propoganda is that the majority of drivers, who are mostly uninterested in driving, will take this simplistic thinking as the whole truth. This means genuine issues will go un addressed and road safety will drop even more.
