Which rather begs the question why people use the term 951 rather than just saying 944 turbo!

951 - ultra rare 439 body. 481 transmision & fitted 559 may sound cool but only 3 people in the country would ever know what we were selling !

439 - no idea
481 - 5 speed manual transmission
559 - a/c

I don't realy see the problem with calling it a 951, no different to using 930, 965. 993 etc.

To be pedantic a 951 is a LHD 944 Turbo, whereas a RHD one would
be 952!

Now we`ve gone down this route before, a 944 turbo is a 944 turbo is a 944 turbo. (951 makes no distinction between 220 / 250bhp).

A 911 carrera is a 3.0 is a 3.2 is a 964, is a 993, is a 996 is a 997. So you really do need the model denominators to establish which car you`re talking about.

951 / 952, not sure about that. They all have a 951 chassis code (ie WP0ZZZ95ZMN1*****).

So what are the chassis codes of the various 911's? 964 for a 964 etc or do they all use 911?

No, they use their repective codes, 964, 993, 996 etc. That`s how they got their model denominations.

The 3.2 Carrera just uses 911.

So if a 964 is called a 964 because of its chassis code why not call a 944 turbo a 951?

Because there is no need to.

You only call a 911 Carrera 4 a 964 to save confusing it with a 993, 996, and 997 which could also be 911 Carrera 4`s. A 944 turbo is a 944 turbo. 1 shape and 1 shape alone.

Similarly a 930 is called so because a 911 turbo could be "carrera", 964, 993, 996 or soon 997 based.

It isn`t to try and be clever or part of an inner circle of knowledge, it`s to save confusion. It`s just the same a BMW 3 series` being reffered to by their "E" codes. (E46 etc).

I'll probably still call mine a 951 as it is quicker to type. I'm not trying to be clever or give it some sort of kudos it doesn't have. When I'm talking to people it gets called a 944 turbo or just a 944.

The problem is it`s bloody confusing. Even I scratch my head when someone calls up offering a 987 for sale, (and for what it`s worth I do think the model denominations between Boxsters are worth while.

you jest but I bet there aren`t many readers of this forum who know what a 951 reffers to ! They all probably think you`ve got some 2 or 3 million pound ex-Le Mans winner and that`s why you keep getting all the begging letters & tax investigations

I'm not sure about that, outside of this forum it may mean little or nothing, but I would have thought that in here it shouldn't confuse too many.

Nice turbo cab btw. what is it about 944's that make people want to crouch down when photographing them from the front?

Right....

Due to the joys of eBay, I found myself woken up this morning by a loud thud from the front door.

'Twas a book, a fabulous book, called 'Porsche Specials' by Lothar Boschen and Jurgen Barth.

In the back, it has a Porsche type number index, and under 945 it says 'Right Hand Drive 944'. I don't know if a 951 in RHD is a 952 as the book was published in 1985.

Still, it's a great book. You should see if you could get a copy.
