May be a bit of a long shot - thinking of trading my 993 3.8 in for a holden HSV supercharged GTS-R (500+bhp) (one of many possibles - may even go back to the integrale...)

any 911 owners had a go in one? any thoughts/views in speed, handling, sensation etc department?

not bothered by their bland looks just want something rare and different.

Cheers

Not such a long shot. Yes I know the HSV range pretty well and have driven several of them. I'm from Melbourne and have a good mate who is an engineer for HSV there so am well acquainted with the handling characteristics of the Clubsport and Monaro from my regular visits home. It is an entirely different beast from what you are used to - very fast in a straight line and they sound amazing. But the thing you can't get away from is the weight - they are really heavy and you feel it mid corner, on the throttle trying to balance natural understeer with imminent power induced oversteer. For all the trick engine and sports suspension it is still raw but not in a good way. Agricultural probaly sums it up and if you are a handling purist this car isn't for you. But if the sound, speed and rarity appeals it can be a hoot.

Personally it is a car that amuses me but I would never own one, here or in Australia where they are far more common. The interor it too close to it's local Commodore taxi cousin and it is for those who are sucked in by the marketing of a performance sportcars rather than the reality of one. I'm sorry if I'm being harsh and I really didn't set out to rubbish it. But a 911 can give you rewards and challenges everytime you drive it that will leave you with a smile on your face. The Holden / Vauxhaul range will astound you as to what a family sedan can do but it is still more a marketing excercise than a true sports car.

If this is the sort of thing you're after I'd buy a nicely depreciated E39 M5.

Best of luck
Loony

I've still got your old Integrale Evo here at Silverstone, only done 3000km since I took it in. Great fun though.

I seen a holden the other day, was a GT somthing or other, looked like a done up vectra.. .. .. went like the clappers though, the guy tried to prove a point on a national speed limit bypass, was in front upon entry to the roundabout prolly wont try again .. .. .. yes it seemed to have a respectable amount of GO !! but before 65 I had gone round him on the dual carriageway :S

and mines a std 996 "98" 320 bhp, honest guv.

keep the 911, youll wish you had shortly after selling.

Allan - good to see the old girl is still going strong - one of the best performing road going grales in the country according to a specialist garage i used to use for serviceing it. As you say its a great laugh. faster than the carerra on a b road by miles

dont suppose you know any cheap supercharged hsv's to trade the 993 in for? or any buyers for the 993?

sounds like a normally aspirated hsv - the supercharger one is significantly more powerful

cheers loony for that - quite fancy a v8 sound track - couldnt ever drive a BMW and as for handling - well i will never track it (thats what palmer sports corporate days are for! - thrash someone elses car and no worries!)so may just be good enough for the uk roads?

to be honest not too sure what i want - a mk2 escort may well fit the bill ;-)

well then. mk2 escort, with V8 dropped in it for the soundtrack. (and a wee bit of extra punch )

Well with due respect to the other thread about test drives, sounds like you need to spend some time in one to work out if it ticks all the boxes for you. Maybe my view is skewed by growing up with Commodores being the biggest selling family car (ie the Australian Vectra/Mondeo) and no matter how big the engine I can never shake knowing what the base car really was. But maybe you can have a clearer perspective and enjoy the car for what it offers, not what it is related to.

Good luck!

yes definately need some proper longish test drives.

theres a cheapish none charged one near to me for £19k which has been for sale for ages (may be able to haggle and price up a charger) - may have a test drive and see if i like it.

Hi marcevo,i have a holden ss ute (a monaro pick up),that has been tweeked to 400bhp by Allen at Weltmeister.I also had a 911 turbo le untill recently.I would say that the Holden is very fast in a brutal way and sounds fantastic, cheap servicing and tuning.Dosen't really handle that well compared to the porsche, but great for drifting and lighting up the tyres.I am very happy with the car ,it's like a rhd yank but handle's better, you can't really compare the two cars as they are both good in there own way.I am now looking to buy a mk1 gt3,but i wouldn't be without the holden.Your best guy to talk to is Allen as he deals in both.Good luck
Chris

so youre after a V8 soundtrack, i would mention laughingly a cayenne turbo, then I might ponder the new cayenne turbo S (0-60 5.1secs or so they claim) and maybe I wouldnt laugh quite so loud....

more likely to buy a rover sd1 for a v8 than a cayenne ;-) infact more likely to buy an allegro than one!

sorry to offend any owners - allegro and SD1's that is :-)

Had several 911s (Carrera, 996, 996turbo, GT2. Had a HSV GTS UK which I kept for 3 years. Almost unheard of for me. Never really got tired of driving it. Always glad to get back to it for combination of speed, handling, comfort, practicality and exclusivity.
Sold primarily because it was my every day car and when something went wrong there were a couple of worrying delays on parts. If it had been anything debilitating, I'd have been off the road. I'd definitely have another though.

I had a Clubsport a couple of years ago and it was the worst new car I have ever owned. There was always something wrong with it including two power steering failures. My 25 yo 930 is in better nick than my 3 yo HSV was when I got rid of it.No comparsion really.
