New BBC online poll

The BBC have a yes/no poll running for "Are wider roads the answer?".

Currently the "ayes" only have around 44% ...

Just out of interest has anyone here ever heard of the 'numerous' studies that show wider roads increase traffic?

I'm sure it'd show in car sales. Whenever the govn widen a motorway, surely people at both ends rush out to buy another motor so they can clog it?!?

Wider roads with more lanes will only be the answer when there are no-more people willing to drive - until then they will always be overcrowded as they cannot handle the flow and are poorly designed....

Wider, with better constructed access points and sensibly designed junctions, integrated with good urban public transport is the answer, but costs money and with GB having lost £22b, then it'll never happen under NL.

And don't forget the wider you build the road, with as many lanes as you want, there will alway be a holdup in the far right lane, with no traffic at all in lane 1

Arn't we missing the point here. Put as many lanes as you like but everyone will still always use the last two lanes.

How cheap is a sign to be erected on motorways to say move in to the left lane when is it’s free.

Seen this in Vancouver and it works.

Has to be writen in many languages though so the imigrants can understand too.

It would be a start if every single newly erected gantry I saw on my journey from Wilts. to N. Yorks. last week said "Oi, you in the BMW - don't tailgate" or "Drive on the left you tossers" instead of "Firefighters strike drive with extra care"

The question on the BBC website is a bit loaded innit? I mean if the question was something like "are you prepared not to use your car TOMORROW and use public transport or shanks' pony to get to work?" then the response would (probably) be 95% disagree.

It's all in the questioning...

that's actually a brilliant idea.. all you'd need is a couple of blokes watching the cameras and a bit of software to update the matrices.. excellent..

Only problem is, all the way down the M3, they'd read "Oi! You in the Primera! Are you a ing lunatic or what?"
