Just tried to boot my home PC and it won't get passed the screen with :-

'Intel inside' logo.

I was adding a second slave HDD, which I've since removed after the PC wouldn't boot. Now after removing the second HDD it still won't boot.

Any ideas???

I'm not an expert but the only thing I can think of is you've got the "master" and "slave" switches turn wrong way round.

One of the P.H. Gurus will be along shortly.

Cheers - only currently using the original HDD without any jumpers set. I'd previously set the jumpers for the second HDD to slave.

check the simple stuff first.

If it can't access the boot disk, then it won't boot. Therefore, firstly check easy stuff like whether you've disturbed the ribbon cable to the motherboard, forgotten to plug the power lead back into the drive, changed the jumpers etc.

That doesn't sound right. The lone disk should be set as master. From the disks i have seen no jumper would set the disk to CS (Cable Select) mode and i swear that causes the problem you describe

I'd try putting a jumper on the 1st disk and setting it as master. If that doesn't work then reset the CMOS buy disconnecting the power and leaving the battery out for 2 mins. You may need to temorarily move a jumper on the board also for a full CMOS reset. Put jumper and battery back and power up and see if the disk is recognised.

You might also want to check the BIOS for the Boot order and ensure the Hard disk is before anything else (purely for fault finding - you can re-arrange after).

Hope that helps

Steve

Actually, that's not a bad idea - depending on the drive, no jumper may be CS or MA. If CS in your case, did you move the drive to a different header on the IDE cable? If so, its probably trying to be a slave with no master so try putting it back on the other header.

Drives are IDE.

The original HDD is connected to the end of the cable. I connected the second HDD to the middle of the cable.

Yes, but it will depend on the particular model whether no jumper = "master" or "cable select"

Assuming you kept the old HDD in the same place, the CS/MA switch is moot as CS assumes the end connector is the master.

Is the other end of the cable attached properly to the motherboard connector? Is the power lead to the remaining HDD inserted properly?

Is the BIOS detecting the drive?

Should be an auto detect function.

The original doesn't have a diagram on the back for jumper settings and didn't have any jumpers either.

The second has diagrams for the following:-

16 heads:
Device 0 - Master
Device 1 - Slave
- Cable Select
- Forcing Dev 1 present

15 heads:
Device 0 - Master
Device 1 - Slave
- Cable Select
- Forcing Dev 1 present

32GB Clip:
Device 0 - Master
Device 1 - Slave
- Cable Select
- Forcing Dev 1 present

Auto Spin Disable:
Device 0 - Master
Device 1 - Slave
- Cable Select
- Forcing Dev 1 present

I set the second HDD to slave on 16 Heads.

Double checked all connections, power, ram, GC, etc - anything that could have been disturbed.

Just removed the MB battery - I'll give a go in a few minutes and see if that makes any difference.

Still no joy. Just removed the original HDD - there was a jumper set to master (I missed it as it is black!).

I've managed to reboot the PC but it now won't show the second HDD.

The original problem was a wrongly connected cable on the DVD Rom - I'd unplugged it to make more space to get the second HDD in and connected it back the wrong way - Doh!

If you're sure the new HDD is set to 'slave' and is plugged into the IDE cable and powered correctly but isn't showing up in the BIOS, try temporarily removing your CD/DVD etc from the 2nd IDE cable and putting it there as 'master' instead?

Actually - is it just that you can't access it or it doesn't show up at all in the BIOS?

What kind of age is the PC and how large is the new drive?

Try setting it to "Force Dev 1 Present" (IIRC, Dev 0 is master and Dev 1 is slave) so you'll force it to look for the slave device as well.

Edit - Also, make sure that the master is on the end connector of the ribbon and the slave is on the one in the middle of it.

Is the first/master HDD an IBM Deskstar drive by any chance? I had exactly the same problems as you, the thing's a pig to set up properly. I didn't shed any tears when it died on me a while ago. Keep frequent backups of anything on there if it is, they're quite flakey apparently.

Tried all of the above without any success - took the HDD back yesterday, but they didn't have another in stock. I will try again this week when I can get another HDD.
