how come when I download a film it says it's 700 odd MB yet when I go to burn it onto a DVD it says it's 4 odd GB?, so just how much have I downloaded, is it 700MB or 4 GB?

What have you downloaded, what format, and how are you burning it?

An image file will likely fill the whole disk, yet be smaller...

Is it an ISO image, and instead of burning to cdr you have burnt to dvdr?
or the copying software has converted it from divx to vob?

I have for example downloaded monty pythons life of Brian in AVI format and it says it is 701MB, yet when I added to burn in nero it said it was about 4GB, is this as it adds something to enable playback on a DVD player?

Your burning software has transcoded from the original avi/mpg to the dvd format files. Personally, I'd have a look at the dvd player you intend to play the disk on, and see if it supports anything other than dvd's - it might do video cd's, or support divx movies, in which case you should just be able to tell your dvd burning software to burn a data dvd instead, and same time and space.
