I've got a wobbly one (Fnar, Fnar) and I think I remember something about someone losing one, but can't find it... what's the deal on wobbly wing mirror glass, what's the best way to secure etc?

Its stuck to the gubbins on the back. Best way to fix is to take it off by flicking the retaining tab at the bottom and taking the mirror glass out with the mounting attached (or almost attached in your case). Scrape off the knackered sticky pads. Then use something like 3M sticky pads, or sticky velcro, or even double sided carpet tape to secure it all, and pop it back.

The glass is has double sided tape on the rear:

that attaches it to a circular mount. The mount can be seen in place here when I had the same problem:

The tab that victormeldrew refers to can (just) be seen at the bottom of the mount in the pic and is pushed to the side (can't remember whether left or right!) to release the mount and glass together. If the mirror and mount are removed together, you can mark up the glass position relative to the mount, remove the mount, clean up the double sided sticky and re-attach in same orientation - then re-fit. If the mirror glass comes off in your hand before you touch the mount (as did mine), then simply remove tape, re-apply and press glass back onto the mount without worrying about the catch or removing the mount!!

Hope this helps...

Its a horrid design and I had no end of problems changing the glass on both my mirrors.

I eventually settled for the 'extremely sticky double sided b4stard tape' and 'superglue' approach.

The attachment of the mirror to the door is even worse IMHO!

Job done, glass virtually fell out itself, turned out to be a botched repair last time around, whoever did it didn't clean the old tape off before putting some new on. I ended up using velcro tape... on the basis I could make sure both sides were stuck properly before joining them together. Also, I have a theory as to why this happens, i.e. if you adjust the mirror too wide, the housing presses onto the glass, which put's pressure on the tape, resulting in it giving up at some point. The morale of the story being don't set your wing mirrors too wide, means you can't see a thing, but there you go!

So how is your heater pad going to transmit heat into the glass?

Eh? the heater element is attached directly onto the underside of the glass, as can be seen on photo's above, and the velcro simply replaces the tape that was on originally, so there isn't an issue.

Also, for me it's a non-issue as the car comes out of the garage on a morning so mirrors are clear anyway.

He's got you there Al!!

I'd keep an eye on the velcro tape though - when I've used it before (not for mirrors!), the glue tends to melt in hot weather and cause the stuck item to slide.....

And you don't want one falling off whilst driving, they flap about on the wires and make a real mess of the paint on the door
