Plate transfer / retention
Discussion
How do's? Sorry for maybe being a little off topic - but it will become relevant very soon I hope!
I have a private plate (not one of the 'wannabe' types that other threads have discussed, just a simple one with my & wife's initals on it)
It was on my TT which got trashed by a lorry, settled with insurance and now in the hands of salvage - my question is (and I think I know the answer, and could probably kinda find out on DVLA site but wondered if anyone here has had first hand experience):
The plate is mine, not the car's, right? The surrendered V5 obviously has the plate detail in it and is now with the salvage company, will they put it back on the road (pretty sure that's gonna happen) under my plate, or will DVLA step-in on 'change of owner notification'?
Should I inform DVLA? I could transfer if to wife's car for the £75 charge, but really waiting to put it on an imminent 111R (thanks fellas!
)
Any thoughts? Thanks

Humm, not sure if this will help, here goes anyway.
i bought a car with a cherished plate on the car (thought nothing of it) drove it round for a few months, then one day had a note left under the wiper blade telling me that this was his old car with his plate! apparently he sold the car to a garage with an understanding between him and the garage that the garage would put the plate under retention, which the garage didn't. Then I came along and bought the car, proceeded to get all the paper work sorted as you do. (remember i didnt know it was a cherished plate at this time)
Any way... to cut a long story short, the plate was found to be now legally mine one reason was I had the V5 now with my details all over it.... so I sold it for £1500.
Must point out before selling I contacted the DVLA for confirmation
So the question is where is the V5 is it still in your name? But if sold on, I think it may be treated as gone - act quickly.

You've given the V5 to the insurance company?
Your
ed mate possesion passes with the V5 unless transfered before hand
If I was you i'd discuss with your insurance company ASAP
When dealing with an insurance write off, normal practise is to submit usual documents, V5, MOT ,copy of tax disc, plus in this instance a copy of the engineers report declaring the vehicle uneconomic to repair and also a letter from your insurance company confirming they have no objection to you transfering the number plate. With these documents they will then put the number onto retention or onto another vehicle
Legally noone 'owns' a number plate, mearly the right to display it on a vehicle and that right passes with the vehicle unless transfered whilst that vehicle is in your ownership

Yeah S Works, some are rather worthy of a good piss take for sure... but as explained initially, it's "not one of the 'wannabe' types that other threads have discussed, just a simple one with mine & wife's initals on it"
CB51 LSB
Nowt thrilling I know, but it was mine... and still is
(...just!)
Here's an even gay-er follow up tho - when Elise SR arrives on 1st March, that'll have WA06 AOX on it. Would you, given the existing plate already in the family, opt for CB52 LSB, or CB06 LSB? Simple toss up between consecutive plates or the new reg
I'm probably thinking about keeping the 06 plate as is until it's no longer new and doing the CB52 LSB option. Rather w*nky I know, but hey... we all have something
