Hi.

I am considering getting a Fiat Coupe, seen a nice one that needs it's cambelt changing. Are there any specialists near me who will do it at a reasonable price? I seem to think the 'normal' engine out price was usually about £1200, but some specialists can do it for around half that?

I am based in Retford, which is North Notts/South Yorks area but would be willing to travel a bit..

Thanks a lot, Greg.

You can get all the belts and additional bits changed now for 400-500 quid at one of several specialists.

The nearest specialists to you that have good records amongst Coupe owners on the Coupe forum (www.fccuk.org and click on forum, bear in mind that just before last Christmas the old Coupe forum disappeared due to hosting issues and this new one has only been going a month or so, nevertheless, there are some seriously clued-up people on there when it comes to Coupes with 10 years+ experience of ownership in some cases) are Motormech in Birmingham and James Twist in Warrington.

Motormech do all the belts, tensioners, pulleys and water pump AFAIK for 400 quid. I've never used them personally, but many many Coupe owners in Midlands/North of England use the garage and have only good feedback. Do a search on the Coupe forum and you'll find their details pretty easily - there is a big thread recommending Motormech at the moment. Surely worth the trip for the saving and piece of mind.

If you are ever in the South East, Powerfiat in Basildon, Torque Italia near Croydon and Auto Integrale near Reading are all highly recommended and will do the full change for 400-500 quid.

Just don't go to FIAT if they are still saying it's an engine out job. They all received an update from FIAT a while back informing them on how to do it with the engine in situ.

HTH

Edit to say: If you are thinking of buying a Coupe, get on the forum (www.fccuk.org/forum/ubbthreads.php) and take a look through the buyer's guide. Also there has just started a list of members around the country who are willing to go with prospective buyers to check out cars in their local area - there may be a forum member near you. Finally, look at the for sale section, the cars on there are generally well known examples owned by regular forum members and IMO by and large offer better value than some of the overpriced tat that crops up on Autotrader.

Thats interesting, considering Fiat are still quoting the same labour time as before. And there was no bulletin that I know of sent.

I was informed of this by more than of the members of the Coupe forum who are in contact with FIAT, but am willing to be proved wrong...

The time to change the Cambelt on the latest edition of the FIAT menu pricing is around 12 hours, this has never changed.

That may be true - but the fact is in relation to the OP that there are specialists who have experience of changing hundreds of belts in a morning and for a third of the price.

It IS possible to do it with the engine in, but FIAT have never approved any other way than to drop the engine.

Hi guys.

Thanks for all the replies, I have been looking on the fccuk forum on and off for the past few weeks. One of my friends has informed me of an Italian Car Specialist in Lincoln. I am going to have a look on the web for any feedback but if anyone else knows about them please post here..

Still not sure whether I am going to get a Coupe, it's totally different to the other cars I am considering but it is such a bargain for a beautiful and quick car.

..Not looking forward to ringing the insurance company though, I know it wont be good news as I'm 23 with no NCB (no accidents, but used classic policies in the past).

Cheers, Greg.
