Driving my pride and joy today when there was a loud bang from the nearside rear. As luck would have it I was almost home. On further investigation I have found that the damper piston on the suspension has popped out of it's holder, thankfully the spring stayed in place. Presumably this is terminal for the suspension leg ie no point trying to force it back in. Firstly where can I get one and how much. Secondly am I going to have to change any of the others as a consequence. I have a 4lt on a 99 plate. Anyones help is greatly apreciated.

Have a look at www.track-car-solutions.co.uk

I'm not a suspension guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I expect if you replace one side with an aftermarket rather than original damper then you should replace the other side as well.

In fact if it was me I'd take the opportunity (looking on the bright side) to replace bth with something a little better and have a look at the other components that can be done cheaply at the same time, springs etc.

This is usually related to deterioration by rust. If so you should take a good look at the wishbones front and rear. Wishbones are a known weak point on Chimaera's, failure occurs under load and will normally write your car off.

I had that happen to me when I was running Spax dampers . It was flipping scary because the steering locked up too, and it could have been very nasty indeed.

Don't consider even for a moment replacing just the one damper. Change all four immediately, and <read between the lines here> pick a good brand. I'm sure that Track Car Solutions or Absolutely Shocks would be happy to make recommendations.

Oh come on. Yes wishbones are a weak point corrosion-wise, but people don't write their car off due to this - you can get new, bushed wishbones for under £200 a corner.

If you suffer this problem yourself, I'll buy your car from you for £1,000 as obviously its a write-off

It's been posted here before. One I remember was a guy driving down the fast lane of some motorway. Front wishbone crumpled for no apparent reason and he suffered the inevitable spin and crash. It has long been known by the dealer network and they religiously examine them during the service. They have very little strength and when rusty they can crumple without warning.

The problem here is damper failure rather than wishbone failure.

Ah, you mean the resultant crash from failure - sorry I misunderstood. I thought you mean't them needed replacing. Sorry.

I read this as damper breaking through bottom bracket. Sorry if I've misunderstood
