Traffic Queues behind Numpties..legal?
Discussion
..I was told one day by a friend who's father is a traffic policeman that slow moving vehicles (ie Diggers/tractors) have to pull over at reasonable oppertunity to let queues of cars past them if there are over 5 (?) cars behind them...
...whilst sat in a queue of 13 cars behind some
in a Fiesta, I was thinking of this.. the Fiesta insisted on a steady 35-40mph along 7 miles of an unchallenging B road that most people drive at at least 60mph. Whilst sadly its not straight enough for much overtaking, the ignorant git could have pulled over to let us by, rather than make all of us late for work..
So the question is.. is there any sort of road law covering this so ?
Cheers
Matt.

Matt I'm not sure there is a law.
But if not, THERE SHOULD BE
If you travel on the A9 in North Scotland, they even have signs there asking people to be curteous and pull over to allow overtaking. It prevents frustration and rash manoevres that cause accidents.
Isn't there something in the highway code about slow speeds on motorways?

Sounds like you need some maniac overtaking lessons from Johno
It's a sad fact that in every walk of life these ignorant myopic berkinalds can be found, straining to see past the brim of their trilbies, completely unaware of or unmoved by the line forming behind them.
You can't legislate against stupidity and ignorance. Not without recourse to the death penalty anyway

Well...there is as I understand it. Its something like driving without consideration for other road users. Very, very rarely somebody gets prosectuted for it and gets a three pointer.
I think there was a (quite well known) case where some inconsiderate blighter in a Combine Harvester created a huge tailback.
I think it extremely unlikely that a numptie driving at 40mph in a NSL would qualify though...as much as I might wish it to be the case. Indeed a polite and observant driver would notice the build up behind and, even if travelling at the speed limit, might attempt to allow vehicles behind to pass.
I can see, however, that such a driver might be tired of pulling over every five minutes as well...
In short..its annoying..but its not unsafe..except in the frustration it causes drivers behind. Its up to them to rise above it and overtake as soon as practical and safe to do so.....whilst avoiding gesticulating wildly, of course.

I've noticed an increase in the number of nerds who do this - no more than 40, anywhere, anytime of day, any driving conditions, no consideration for the people behind them at all.
Driving home after work is a chore, so why not get it over and done with quickly , instead of dragging it out this way. Fair makes my blood boil!

Perhaps they are intimidated by all the gatsoes the news keeps telling us about?
Or perhaps they just should be banned...
Most of the time this would'nt be so bad if the cars behind them left some room so you could overtake 1 or 2 at a time. That REALLY
's me off!
Also people who don't look in their mirrors before overtaking - I nearly had to eat Land Rover the other night. He had three excellent opportunitys to overtake the 40miler in front of us and did'nt take any of them then as I was overtaking, about equal with his back bumper, he decided to try and overtake...
Result: Me braking massively and flashing lights hitting horn etc. Him giving me the finger! He's quite lucky I was in a good mood that day so I only imagined dragging him out of the LR and making a mess of him.
BTW I did use my indicators and had plenty of stopping distance between me and him when I started the manouver.

Yip it is so dodgy. In Scotland 2 yrs ago I was very close to killing me & the missis plus the 4 people in the numpty driven car that decided to pull out on me as i was mid way through an overtake, im doing 120ish, him around 40ish. I don't even want to think what would have happened if we had connected at those speeds.
And then you get the FCUKWITS that cant drive/see in the dark
Got stuck behind one last night in a Renault Scenic on a NSL doing 35-40 max
Yes it was dark, the road was quite winding But was thereany need to brake hard for every FCUKING corner and virtually complete an Emergecy stop every time a car came in the opposite way
edited; for spelling, lost concentration thinking about how long the To55er held me up

Dear me, what a kerfuffle. Look, if we didn't have lots of ninnies driving around really slowly then we wouldn't get quite the same sensation of speed when blasting past. If you're not doing it for the thrills; if you're uncomfortable with taking a chance on the odd blind bend or crest then get up earlier, play some Kenny G, and try not to look for faults in others.
If you don't leave home assuming you'll be able to go fast, you might be pleasantly surprised when you can.

...and they never use full beam lights. You can't see past them to overtake unles you do the full beam thing yourself - then they flash and gesticulate.
This morning I passed three cars stacked up behind a 30miler in a NSL. A mile later the road turns in to a 20 limit (school with pavement on one side only) and all four of the useless twats tailgate me having done the best part of double the limit to catch me up. WTF is wrong with these guys?
They are also the people that tend not to do less than 40 in any speed limit or conditions either. So when you have just managed to overtake them and reach a 30 or 20 limit they are then tail-gateing you because you don't speed in built up areas. You can just hear them saying "so where did driving like a lunatic get him then"

These are the ones who slow right down when something is coming the other way and then speed up when the road is clear just as you are trying to overtake.

What I hate even more are those people who don't overtake and drive up the backside of car infront. I had to take 4 cars, a landrover, a MPV and the slow sugar beet lorry all in one go in my Nova in Norfolk the other day. Believe me that is very scarey

what? no sympathy for you there iguana, dont really think you should be trying to pass people with that much difference in speed.

Remember signs like that on the way to Stranraer. It was bloody satisfying cutting up the numpty shedpuller who refused to even pull off the crown of the road for 45 minutes at 40 mph! The joys of a transit - nearly put the ****er in a hedge, then he pulled over! Got toots and waves from everone else behind him as they passed me (I was sitting right at the side of the road so it was simple to pass me), really brightened my journey...

Not just the dark, there are enough fcukwits out there who can't see full stop whether it's daylight or not.
Hmm, well, yes. Maybe.
But some people can't help the fact that they can't see as well in the dark as they'd like to. It socks their confidence. And it's all very well for someone with 20/20 vision to say that they shouldn't be on the road but to deny someone the ability to go from A to B just because they can't or don't choose to drive at the NSL (or beyond!) is pretty draconian.
A bit of consideration needed here perhaps?

eer what excuse can I give errr how about minimising the exposure danger time spent on the wrong side of the road........
Well yes you are right, it was too high a speed diferential and in truth a bit reckless but I am a lot more cautious nowhowever in my defence I did slow down from a higher speed to do the overtake

I know its not big or clever, but it was one of those high speed days, when you keep such a high speed up that when you slow down to even 100 it feels slow.
Of course I would have been at fault (along with the guy not checking his mirrors) if the crash had happened, but with no gaps in the line of following cars and no one overtaking, coupled to a lot of power available its easy to get a bit carried away.
