Guys
Just a quick one. Im not an engineer and was born "technically challenged" so wondered if you guys could help. I can hear a faint clicking sound when I am driving........is this pretty normal for the engine? Also my other half said it is "chugging" a little but i put it down to being cold as it soon sorted itself out.......any ideas? Or do u need a little more?

Well, before we can comment I think we need to find out a little more information - how frequently, linked to anything?

The answer will probably be "TADTS", but it's nice to check!

Hear it on and off really.....it is not that loud and dont know if it is part of the "normal sound" of the engine. The car only had a 12000 mile service 2000 miles ago so I might just be paranoid!

Just an idea, I had a clicking noise while driving and it turned out to be the batt conection plug cover(under lhs sill) touching the road and bouncing around. Long shot but worth checking????

Had a clicking noise on mine when starting her up...........

Took her to dealers who after having her for 5 days put it down to a relatively loud clutch bearing!!!! Does the noise go away after you put it in and out of gear several times?????

The clutch is fine at the mo, as stated by the dealers and there was no point in all that labour just to get to the bearing........

Just another possible....

Took it out today and had the roof off and it was a lot more noticable. It seems to be when in gear and I accelerate / press the throttle.......clicking sound that sounds like something isnt in place..........help as dont want to spend money getting some thing checked OR have my engine blow up!

Does the clicking sound a bit like a sewing machine?

If so, it may be the timing chain(s) which need tightening periodically.

Mine were very noticable at 25,000 miles.

Yep good description! Does sound a lot like that and gets quicker as you accelerate..........so you may be right. is it a simple job or something that the garage needs to pull my car apart for?

Does the clicking sound tick and recede each time you press and depress the throttle? I.E gets faster when the engine is under load (throttle) and then subside to steady clacking on tickover? If so get it to the dealers.

Justin may be right it could be timing chain related, however it could be valve wear. Stop the car and leave it to idle put your ear near the windscreen wipers and check if the sound is coming from the back cylinder. I had a similar problem last year, no loss of power or oil use. It turned out to be a re-build for me. Obviously you can't diagnose and engine on a forum but for peace of mind get it checked out fella. As soon as you take it to the dealer they will know straight away just by hearing it. All the best.

Cheers.

Yes, the 'sewing machine' gets quicker with revs!

From memory there are five timing chains. One is accessable with the engine in place. I had this one adjusted, which solved the problem for seemingly 100 miles or so. I am pretty sure to get to the other chains it is an engine out job. I lived with the sound (although it did seem to get louder!) until I had to have the engine out to get a new clutch fitted and had it done then to save some money.

That said, although I sound you describe sounds very like what happened to my car, as someone has just mentioned it could be something else, so its certainly worth getting it checked out.

Dan - I absolutely concur with Mats - I had similar sounds with mine back in July = rebuild; BUT, this could be a wide array of issues, and your dealer should basically be able to listen in a tell within a very short time period. Not sure who you go to, but I can recommend Racing Green in Ash Vale who diagnosed my issue within 5-6 seconds....Get it over there pronto though.

Took the car out today with the roof off and noticed mine to has this 'sewing machine' clicking sound, which also gets faster when reved. Does sound very timing chain like IMO. Very worrying as i have a reciept for this being done less than 300 miles ago !
That reminds me must change warranty details into my name !!

I believe that this 'sewing machine' noise can also be caused by the injectors?

The timing chain is a slightly heavier 'click' in my experience but I too have had to have the chains adjusted - a few hundred miles after my head work which was not surprising.

Echo the advice that if you are in any doubt, pop down to a good dealer or indie for peace of mind - it's important to remember that the S6 is quite a 'noisy' engine in any case.
