Ghosts,do you believe
Discussion
Watching the ghosty programme on BBC1 it reminds me of an experience.
Ive never seen one but deffinately heard one,and not sure what to make of it.
My ex wife and me used to own a florist in a village on an old route down to the west country,it was a very old building, centuries old and the route and local inn was mentioned in the doomsday book.
Where we lived was above the old shop in a two bedroom house that used to be apart of the poyntz hotel which had long been demolished.
We had a loft that was all boarded out with varnished floorboards, both dwellings next door were empty, one had been empty for ages and was locked the other side the owners had gone on holiday.
My ex and me had just gone to bed,i lay there in a semi state of sleep while while my other half was reading a book, she put the book down and lay down to sleep, switching the side light off.
After around a few minutes i heard a loud footstep directly above me in the loft the loud footsteps carried on across the ceiling,my wife wispered "Cliff can you hear that",i replied "shhh i can",we lay there frozen and the footsteps stopped.
I was apprehesive at first because i know deepdown this was not real, then i thought if it is and someone is in our house then i want to know about it.
I leapt out of bed and turned on all the lights, checked all the rooms, that were empty then turned my attention to the loft,i opened the hatch and pulled down the ladder ,turned on the light and climbed up into the loft..it was empty.
I got dressed and checked next door, both sides, but they were locked and empty.
To this day i cant offer an explanation, but my staff regulary reported odd things like taps turning on on their own and other stuff,if i had to make a verdict, i heard something that is unexplainable and err on the side of believing.

When I was living in my old house I also had a strange feeling that it was being haunted by the ghost of my sister, although I have no idea why. It was just a feeling.
My mum said she saw an old woman dressed entirely in white, with perfectly white hair, clutching a broom and sweeping puddles (!?) when out walking the dog in Chessington once. She turned away for a second to watch the dog and when she turned back the woman had gone.

2 occasions...
1) I was a Cub Scout and our hall was next to a derelict house. It had been empty for years and sometimes when waiting for our leader to arrive we would sneak over there for a little messing about (as 9 year olds did). We would always hear the stories of chains rattling etc in the house but never believed it, until we heard them......
Curiousity got the better of us and we went upstairs, we knew we were the only ones there, it was physically impossible for someone else to be there unless they could walk through walls.., nothing was found, only some old rope, and we all knew what we heard....
The house has since been refurbished and converted into 2 cottages, i ended up getting to know the son of the one owner a number of years later, he also said some strange things went on but learned to live with it..
2) I got very close to an ex g/friends sister for a number of years. She went to live with her nan for a few months one autumn. One night while her nan was in hospital and very serious we decided to have a nice night out and i ended up staying the night in the spare bed. i was subconciously woken (i think..) with the bedclothes on the floor, i felt as if i was picked up and carried around the bedroom, purposly past the mirror where it seemed i was being carried by an old man, i was then placed back on the bed.. the next morning i awoke with it fresh in my mind and my bed clothes on the floor.... the vision was exactly the same, everything told me then what happened seemed real! I unwillingly discussed this with my lady friend,.. and she said?... "oh thats just grandad, you slept in his bed last night..."
Do i believe? i'm optimistic shall i say...

I believe I've smelt a ghost.
Trackside, myself, Little Trackside and Little Trackside's friend were on holiday in Symonds Yat a few years ago. I love caves and decided to drag everyone down one of the usual commercial ones laid out with walkways.
We were all walking back up and out of the cave and I was right at the back of the group. All of a sudden I experienced what I can only describe as someone blowing cigarette smoke in my face. It certainly wasn't Little Trackside or her friend as they were only 9 years old, and Trackside and I don't smoke. No-one was behind me and we were the only people around, but it was so real that the smoke made me cough and my eyes burn and it smelt like Old Holborn tobacco....

I've had a couple of weird ones....
1) My grandma was very very ill in hospital, eventually the hospital said she could go home but the inference was that she would come home to die. The family were round and my grandma asked me to pop up to her room and get her hairbrush from the dressing table. I went up but knowing the house pretty well I didn't bother putting the light on. I was in the bedroom looking for the hairbrush when a glowing shadow (hard to describe properly, a black shape with a glowing outline) walked past me. I got a strong feeling it was my aunt (my grandma's sister) who had died a couple of years previously. Suddenly I wasn't worried about my grandma any more, came downstairs and told my family that my grandma would be OK. Sure enough she made a full recovery and lived another 10 or so years.
2) About 6 weeks after my grandpa died I was walking home from the bus stop and saw an old fella walking towards me. I moved to one side of the path to let him past but kept on walking. As he approached I looked up and it was my grandpa. I nodded, he nodded back and we passed. For some reason I didn't think anything of it until I'd gone another 5 or 6 paces, turned around and he'd gone. There are no exits or turnings off this road so nowhere to go.
3) I was setting up a sound mixing desk in the Scarborough Spa which is supposedly haunted (the usual grey lady stuff). I was on my own in one of the smaller conference rooms when all of a sudden it got really cold. All the levels on the desk went crazy for a second and then it warmed up again.
On most things I keep an open mind but having had experiences like this I would say I believe.

I personally am not sure, but my mum had a bit of an experience once.
When she used to be a midwife she was driving to work for a late shift, about 11pm. Going down the lane which runs through the village my parents lived in back then, quite a busy road but no footpaths. About 2 mins into the journey she said she saw an old man standing in front of her in the middle of the road, she was doing about 60mph so broke very hard, she though she had hit him and slowed to a stop and jumped out the car. She couldn't see anyone or anything around.... Got very scared got straight back in the car and went home in a bit of a state. Apparently quite a few people have had such an experience at the same spot. Freaky, eh.

My brother and his girlfriend bought an old house in west London five years ago that needed a full refurbishment.
Whilst working on the walls etc., (and living in a rented flat) they often heard noises that would prompt them to search the house but never find anyone. They used to joke about it but would say things like "three loud knocks- did you hear them?" to which the other would affirm.
This refurbishment took 5 months over winter but they decided to have a Christmas dinner in the front room- even though there was no heating, furniture or carpets. After the meal, my brother asked his partner where the box in the corner had come from. She said that she'd never seen it before. It contained a calf-skin bound provinance/ history of the house- going back to the first owners- and neither of them had been aware of it. Neither the seller's solicitor nor their agent mentioned it's existance and they had been in that room many times.
Once the house was complete, the knocking noises stopped and it has a good atmosphere.
But, their child, my neice, who has just had her third birthday, has been recently asking her mum to 'only let daddy come into my room when I'm asleep and not that other man" when she's being put to bed.
My neice's bedroom is at the top of a turned staircase and the house's provenance clearly states that a gentleman hanged himself there in 1828...

Spooky!
Was talking about this subject today with friends. I keep an open mind on it.
Deffinately something unexplained/able happened a couple of time when I was younger, always at 22:50. They we really in your face things like lound noises or cupboards flying open. Now tho, if anything slightly wierd happens in the house, like a towel falling down that's been there for days for example, its always 22:50!
I dont necessary believe that ghost are related to religion etc, just that they may exist as a branch of science as yet unexplored.
Anyone used to watch Strange but True btw? Use to scare the sh1t out of me!!!

an ex lives in a house which is built around the foundations of an old sheperd's cottage, the owner of which was supposedly involved in a suicide pact gone wrong which resulted in him hanging himself. my ex told me how at 10:30 at night there would be a tapping coming from the dining room (like feet swinging against a wall or a table or something) and sometimes the dining room door would start banging. the sadistic cow loved her house being haunted and all things ghostly, i however made sure i was always some place else come 10:30
i like to say i dont believe, but the only thing i really do believe is that im never going to live in a house more than 100 years old
