I went for the Exige.
Other than the roof it provided what I wanted out of the box without having to go the modification route (and the associated insurance hassles.) Don't like the shut lines or skinny fronts on the R while the more S1 style handling of the Exige is just what the doctor ordered.
Simply couldn't be bothered with the time and expense of having to faff about all over again to dial-out some of the R's understeer or the bother of finding tyres to suit me. Been there, done it, can't be arsed.

For the road - the 111r no question. For road and track, the exige. Suspension and wheel/tyre mods on a 111r are totally unnecessary for road use. Actually they are probably slower than the standard setup on the road.
Exige tyres = yokohama 048's. Not a great road tyre, last 5000 miles and cost £650 a set. Also they are not great in the wet / cold. In standing water they are scary. On the track though, with a bit of heat in them, they are the dogs danglies!
111r - tyres work fine in the wet. Last 3 times as long. Roof off etc. Job done.

You should see the state of my tyres from Friday`s frolics
The R is a good all-round road car, and with the skill necessary an excellent track day tool, but as mentioned the Exige ticks all the boxes if that is what you are after. Must admit to seriously thinking about trading in the R for the white Exige that Wilson`s had . It looked .....Different !

It looked .....Different !111R looks like a sports car and you have the summer roof off wind in your hair type thing. Stock tyres perform better in the wet - I find my R with the original 6.5K miles Bridgestones have plenty of grip. The ride is supposed to be better which is a plus on the UK B roads with lots of uneven surfaces.
Exige looks like a race car and will perform better on the track. The stock tyres will need replacing much more often and are not great when it really chucks it down (standing water etc). The ride is firmer but if you're after a comfy cruiser then neither will be the right choice.
To be honest, if you're not going to track the car then I'd say the "R". The Exige looks great though, I actually prefer the looks to my R. The Exige will also deliver that extra performance around the corners but you'll only really gain advantage on a track - or am I talking crap, anybody driven both?

Pure road use go for the 111R, if you don't need the creature comforts what about an S1 with Honda/Audi conversion, a few come up on the classifieds, remove fears of HGF on the K Series and remove the understeer issues.
But neither car has a K series engine?!?!
Which is why the fears of HGF are removed.
