Jaguar X-Type Coupe?
Discussion
Flicking through this months EVO last night and came across a letter (letter of the month) from a reader saying he'd done a design study for a Jaguar X-Type Coupe but said that Jaguar weren't interested.
This sounds very naive on Jaguars/Ford's part. Jaguar are trying to shed the 'old man' image and an X-Type Coupe would surely contribute taking the fight straight to BMW. Two doors, 4 wheel drive, big V6, surely it would sell?
Looking at the guys sketches I think it looks stunning and the people at EVO seem to agree.
Come on Jaguar - pull your finger out. What do you guys think?

Don't know about an X-type coupe, but the rumour I've heard is that they are seriously considering an "S-type" coupe based on the R-Coupe concept car
Beautiful vehicle!

The R coupe is very similar to a concept (here he goes again!) forwarded by one of my compatriots at Cov'.
It's probably no conicdence that he did his placement at Jag, and as far as I can remember, went on to work there too.
Not bad for a Boomeye who only ever wanted to work for RRRRRRRRovah.:thumbsup!:
IMHO the 'S' type would be far better suited to being converted to a coupe. Something about the high, but some how insubstantial, prow if the 'X' I think would make it look cheap and un-credible (if that's a word), but that's an issue I have with the 'X' as a rule.

...I know what I mean. I must find s way to include scribbles or somthing to illusrate my ramblings....

Coupe vesrsion has no chance. Priorities are on a diesel and a break. Prototype and mule of these have been doing the rounds at Halewood reportedly. Jag will not be making a 500 million loss as speculated but more like a 750 million loss !!! So projects are getting squeezed mighty tight. There'll be no nice haves on the cards. The shame is that the R type, which was to be done by Prodrive, was scrapped last year and is unlikely to resurface soon.
Sorry - sportscars? As far as I know, Jaguar has made exactly one (street) sportscar, in the last 40 years. Furthermore, compared with the other real sportscars of the day, the earlier Jag 'sports' models were absolute crap, in terms of performance and build. Sure, they made some great race cars, but so what? Jaguar has always been about 'a pretty face', rather than light weight, BHP, or bothering to do the hard work of engineering-in the necessary mechanical 'robustness' for sporting use.
Podie said: I hope Jag DO reply... be interesting to see what they say. As for the S-Type coupe based on the R-coupe... who makes up these rumours?!!?
I got this from the Jaguar message board from a poster that got it from the US Automobile magazine (January, 2003 issue):
It lists the following scheduled releases:
2003: X-Type sedan face lift
2003: New X-Type sport wagon
2004: S-Type sedan face lift (taller rear end, revised side sheetmetal and door panels)
2004: New XJ-series sedan, long wheelbase XJ-series model follows
2005: X-Type sedan face lift
2005: XK8/XKR coupe and convertible replacement
2005 or 2007: New S-Type coupe based on new lightweight sedan platform; timing of hardtop model dependent on decision to build softtop derivative.
2006: New S-Type sedan employing new lightweight rear-wheel-drive platform.
2007: New X-Type-based lightweight roadster; front-engine two-seater replaces stillborn F-Type droptop, gets new rear-wheel-drive platform.
2008: New X-Type-based lightweight coupe, new rear-wheel-drive platform.
2009: New, lightweight X-Type sedan, rear-wheel-drive instead of all-wheel-drive.
...take with a grain of salt and all that, but looks promising...

Not a chance, I part assemble Jaguar X-Types and Land Rover Freelander 2's here at Halewood Liverpool, and the X-Type is going to die a death.
So no, no coupe planned.
We do however have a nice new colour called Blue Prism which is a very unique colour. It is like a light blue with a tiny greenish hue in it. Hard to imagine, but It is a nice colour.
It is available in the Land Rover, and the Jag X-Type as they are both sprayed in the same paint shop and assembled on the same Production line as I said.
The only colours that are specific to the model are...
Emerald Fire(A nice Green almost identical to Jaguar Racing Green) Specific to X-Type
Tonga Green and Tambora Flame (Now extinct, was a bright orange special edition) Specific to Land Rover Freelander 2
All other Colours are shared.
We have had talks however of getting a 7 Seater Freelander 2, and a smaller version of the Freelander 2, which could Possibly be a 2 Door (Coupe) So that may have been chinese whispered into a coupe Jag.
The 2009 X-Type wont be sold in Yanksville(USA)As the Company are not making money from it in that market.
That's as much as I know.
Please don't try to contact me or reply, as I have selected no contact.
I don't really have too much time on my hands, but I saw this post looking for pics of the 2009 Jag, and thought I'd wipe a bit of the blury info of the X-Type Jag coup thing.
PistonHeads "Gassing Station" gives you a clue to this forum, quite alot of the Info is gassed up!
I try not to listen to rumors, just be patient, and then wait and see.
you listen to a load of Hype about a new car coming out and then rush to a dealer to place your order.

[quote=groomi]Errrr, you do realise you're replying to a thread which has been dead for five years?
Groomi,
Time passes slowly (5 years) when you are mass (hand) builiding X type's at Halewood for the huge orders (single figures) they have to meet.
I'd like to know how many X types come down the production line compared to Freelander 2's every day?
