O/T - City Breaks

Mrs Podie and I fancy getting away from it all (well work) sometime in the new year... and fancy a city break... Reykjavik happens to appeal.

So, aside from good old lastminute.com, does anyone know of a place on the web where I can trawl for a bargain...?

Podie, try via the Icelandic airlines website + Icelands Tourist Information office, also companies like Citibreaks might feature that destination.

p.s. don't ignore Vienna as an ideal winter break, can recommend it.

Ive been planning to go to the land of ice too but not managed it yet. For a fantasic cityin the summer I advise Stockholm. Its just such a great place and in hot weather unbeatable and the cruises & trips available out to and round the islands make even Sydney harbour seem crap!

What about Norwich, Podie ?

It's not far to travel and is becoming very 'in' thanks to Mr Partridge.

Interesting visits to the Owl Sanctuary, some Victorian Follies and of course the nearby Bernard Mathews turkey farm.

All in all it's boooootifull

Summer would be the time to visit Iceland IMHO, you're not going to do much sightseeing in 2 hours of daylight

I took the wife to Geneva last December on a cheap city break. £29 each return from Liverpool to Geneva (easyjet), hotels were expensive though, a 3* at the top of town (not the nicest bit) cost around £100 per night. I struggled to get booked into anywhere via the internet, but my sister in law is a travel agent and she got us booked into a hotel I'd already tried and told was booked up. If you can travel on less obvious days (avoid going Sat AM returning Sun PM) , you can pick up some good deals.

The Wife and I went to Iceland for our Honeymoon, excellent place, I have tons of info on it, did loads of research, feel free to mail me off-line.

Not in Iceland, or at least I don't think so...

Short daylight in winter, and Iceland is very expensive. Rekjavik in the winter can be snowy and icy with high winds, which can mess up any planned boat trips. If you want to get out in the open and check out the nice spots with hot springs, you won't have much time. Icelandics stay indoors in the winter, and get totally smashed on various distilled products

That would surprise me - I used to see them when I was growing up in Orkney (quite a bit further south than Iceland)

Yip seen them at home in Fort William too. Quite a bit south of orkney! Not very often right enough. Actually just twice but still...

Well according to a mate of mine... you do... between November and March, get to see the Northern lights... oh and the Icelandic tourist board are keen to point it out too!

As for the winter... having spent more than my fair share of time freezing my nuts of in various parts of Poland... I think I'll be OK.

Having spoken to my mate (who lived there for two years) around January and February is the best time to go - if you like a winter break. Good fun on the old skidoos, the springs and geysers... and the nightlife is supposed to be good too.. things don't get going till 10pm.

We shall see.. it's something different, somewhere I've not been before, so I'm willing to take a risk and see how it goes.
