When changing from 1st the 2nd gear the change is not as smooth as the rest of the gearbox. Sometimes it needs quite a forcefull gear change, you can also here it 'clunk' as it goes into 2nd gear. Has anyone heard of this before.
I used to own a 2001 Boxster S and it was exactly the same. The problem was worst when the gear box oil was cold first thing in the morning. I posted the same question on here back then and Joel from RSJ Sportscars replied that "they all do that, sir".
Mine was under warranty and so I took it to my local OPC. They said that there was nothing wrong with the gearbox, although I disagreed.
I used to change from 1st straight to 3rd until the gearbox oil heated up.
I certainly wouldn't pay 4 grand of my own money to try to get a smoother change by fitting a new gearbox.
My girl's '03 Boxster S has exactly the same problem and is not any different once it's warmed up. It's going into the OPC next week, so it'll be interesting to see what they say.
And here was I thinking she could drive!
My last '98 996c2 always had a stiff gear change into 2nd, but that did ease up once it was warmed up. I fitted a short-shift kit on it, which made the change more positive, but slightly stiffer, this was better because the movement was shorter, so less chance of missing the gear, it mad it better. A slightly slower but firm movement was required.

I took my 2004 Boxster 'S' in for it's first service at Reading last year.....and amongst the list of things I wanted done, I asked them to look at the gearbox because 2nd was notchy/stiff when cold. I got a phone call later in the day saying they wanted to keep it for an extra day so they could fit a new gearbox! All under warranty too!
