I'm looking for a 968.

I've got up to about £14k to spend, which from what I can gather should get me a good one. I'm ideally looking for a Sport, but would consider a CS.

Can anyone recomend a buying guide highlighting points I should be looking out for?

I've found www.porsche968uk.co.uk, but could do with a little more general advice.

Porsche & 911 did a buyers guide a while back, it was OK but did not really say anything new.

968UK is as good a place to get info and the members there are very helpful, usually!

There are some older 911 & Porsche World articles that are pretty good for general advice - I will check at home tonight which issue(s) I am thinking of, as I probably have them somewhere, but you will always learn a lot more from fellow enthusiasts on good web forums. Just do a lot of reading!

When I was buying, the Hartech guide was pretty useful www.hartech.org.uk/buyers.html

£14k pretty much gets you the run of the market nowadays, £12k will buy a good car..

Points to look for; engine top end (cams & drive chain) can wear, (good Porsche specialists can check for this), and the engine can leak oil. Also check for signs that the cam belt has been renewed, and its good to see pulleys and water pump done at the same time. The rear gearbox/differential can be noisy, brake calipers suffer from corrosion (in common with all contemporary alloy Porsche/Brembo calipers), and you can get water leaks around the hatch and sunroof.

The 'Coupe' is the loaded one, usually with leather, sounds and air/con. Most CS have fixed front seats and no rears, and not much in the way of sound deadening. The Sport is the same car, but usually with 'comfort' front seats and rears, along with c/locking, e-window/hatch/mirrors. The comfort seats are mounted lower and can give a better driving position if you're tall.

Aircon is rare on rhd Sports and CS's - look for it on the option codes list and a 'snowflake' button, as some people think the non-a/c system will cool as it has temperatures marked on the dial. BTW there are very, very few rhd Coupe's around from '93 on.

All these cars are 10+ years old, so budget from some suspension refreshing(dampers, bushes, alignment) if it hasn't been done. M030 is over-rated, and only worth it for the bigger brakes if you want to do track-days.

Other than that, you're just looking for the usual signs of abuse or lack of care. These cars are strong and built well, and are easily capable of big mileages if well maintained - but the market doesn't like 100k plus cars.

Budget around £1k p.a. for repairs & maintenance, insurance can be cheap if its a 2nd car.

IMO the Porsche 968 is one of the best combinations of style, praticality, performance and handling for the money in the market right now. Find a good one and you won't regret it.
