Chelsea Cruise History... contributions please

I didn't start going to the Chelsea Cruise until the early 80s. I'm interested to know more about its roots - when did it start? I know it was originally up the Kings Road.

Also interested to know when/how it was stopped. I stopped going in the early 90s when it was becoming overrun with Max Power-type cars and the Yanks'n'Rods (that I preferred) appeared less.

Used to go as a lad in the mid 70's; mainly yank muscle cars then

I was a regular and went some months either with or without a car,apparently there were a couple of big fat blokes with some big Mopars that used to take on others at drag racing and sneak off to another venue to race,although i never saw this but was told by a few others that went.

used to get the odd burnout/drag across Albert bridge and into Battersea park too.

So what is is status now? All chav'd up Nova's or real American iron and serious wheels - any one be recently - worth a look now?

I was actually after real info about the Cruise's roots. I remember it back to the early 80s but would like to hear from people who know about - or were there in - the 60s/70s.

When exactly did it start and how?
