OPC Warranty - worth the paper it's printed on?

Got a "clonk" sound coming from the front-right wheel on full-lock (noticed it when reversing out of a car park last night). Called my local OPC, asked if the investigation would be covered under warranty, and apparently it's only covered if the faulty component is covered.

Load of crap in my opinion. I'll be selling the thing at this rate and moving to a marque that gives a flyer about its customers.

hardly the end of the world! Likely to be a worn anti roll bar bush-had the same on my C4 a few years ago

If its the same clonk i had (full lock when reversing when car cold) i had it fixed today as part of service. Anti roll bar (bush) - £40 fitted i think - bargain!

i've run my 996 cab 4 for a year as a weekend drive wth no warranty, and i feel it was a mistake. Having viewed all the posts about RMS dooom and gloom it was always at the back of my mind. In the end i decided that i'd service and warranty the car in spring as it's garaged over winter. And hey ho! a nice day over the xmas break and i decided to knock the cobwebs off, and you guessed it, came home with an oil leak!

Thankfully it turned out to be not the RMS and hence cost about £370 rather than the usual RMS outlay.

However i can honestly say that it's a weight off my mind, and feel able to really enjoy my mid life crisis (when it comes home)

not that I'm any fan of OPCs but i think youre being a bit harsh. Generally speaking warranties, Porsche or otherwise, dont cover normal wear and tear. If they did they would be so expensive as to be useless. they do cover things that break suddenly. So you ring them up and say, over the phone, youve got a clonk, and you honestly expect them to say, yes thats fine, investigate under warranty, commit to several hours of labour costs and we wont charge even if the end result is a wear and tear item? I'd be more worried about their business acumen than their mechanical skills.

there seems to be a running theme on PH where people take the view that because they buy a porsche nothing should ever go wrong, if it does then its the OPCs fault, and warranties should offer a 100% guarantee of never having to shell out any money ever for your car.

stuff wears out. stuff breaks. ask them to investigate the fault - either way youre gonna have to do this. if it's a warranty item them expect no charge for either investigation or parts/fix. if a wear and tear problem, expect to pay for their time as well as the parts (just as you would an indie). thats fair.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions too soon.

I had the exact same symptoms in a car of mine that was 2 years old and under manufacturers warranty.

I called them up & described it, they said "sure, bring it in. Whatever it is, its likely to be covered by the warranty". I took it in, turns out it was only the suspension strut had worked loose. They tightened it and it was fine thereafter.

So my points are 1) it may be nothing - so don't fret!, and 2) yes, I do think the manufacturer should say "bring it in & lets have a look"

(For reference, that manufacturer was Honda)

i do too, I just dont think they should have to guarantee on the phone, on the basis of a description that can be no more than vague, that no matter what it is they'll cover the cost of investigating under warranty

Well, it went into the OPC this morning. They're also going to have a look at the brake discs, which are a bit rusty on the back. Tried to give them a good hammering at the weekend, not sure if it improved them at all.

Hopefully it'll either be a small problem or covered by the warranty...
