I have to pay my tax bill tomorrow. No payments on account (partnership for a few years, then a ltd company, then a sole trader), so the robbing gits want over 6 grand from me.

Oh well, I didn't want to go on holiday anyway.

Feeling your pain, just paid mine today. Cocked up slightly last year so have reassigned some profit from last year into this years accounts and it is proving expensive to say the least. Feel like I have just "passed" a watermelon.

What he said. Sick of funding a bloated public sector and wastrel underclass.... My Gregory Peck will pay for several wastrels to do fk all for a while. If more wastrels worked we'd need less public sector people to administer less 'benefits'... and we could all pay less tax.

Filed and paid up a week ago, in order to go skiing in the full and clear understanding that even if I came back in a total body-cast, at least Gordon's Goblins wouldn't get a penny in late dues out of me were I to be completely immobile.

As it happens, I could have saved myself the tax bill by simply not going to Verbier...and coming back feeling like my legs have been beaten with iron bars for a week and my liver boiled in red wine and Jaegermeister.

Still, now begins the long wait....dreading the drop of that shite brown envelope for the next two months, just in case I've screwed up again. There was one spring, post tech-bubble, when I got an IR missive demanding 40 grand (which I'd blown on one on Blackpool's finest, obviously) with menaces....cue a monstrous trouser accident as the PC refused to reload my only copy of the tax return, and me sweating like a pig wondering how I'd monged the payments on account quite that badly, waiting on hold for the tax office.

A brief, panic-striken conversation with the tax officer.....at which he said..."Oh yes.....that's our fault....bet that gave you a scare, eh?"....and zeroed the due amount accordingly. To make reference to the Good Book...St. John, Ch 11, Vs 35.

And what about the adverts saying "would you throw away £100?" Of course, we're all chucking away many thousands on the latest Government gymic and/or pethetic social services black hole!

The worst bit was that my accountant initially said "About £2200", which I thought was ace. Then he went "Oh hang on, thats the previous year's payments on account.............yep...........hmmmm.............£6000"

BUGGER.

The BBC News stated yesterday that 900,000 people missed the deadline last year and were duly awarded the £100 fine. That's £90,000,000 in fines. Where did that go? Bloody scroungers no doubt!

Oh, please don't mentioned the dreaded T word.
Over the past year, I have had to pay over £25k, and now they are demanding another £9.5k.
It is my own fault. I have paid a lot of assessments and accumulated several of the penalties. This, plus interest, soon adds up.
Moral of the story. Always pay on time!
The F430 will have to wait.

All of the 900,000 who missed the deadline were not fined. The £100 fine is not due in all cases. Even if the Revenue automatically charge you the £100 (as they often do) they MUST re-credit it to your Statement of Account as soon as it is obvious that it was not due. Also, if the taxpayer has paid the £100 in error, the Inland Revenue must pay interest on the £100 for the period they were holding it incorrectly.

Much more worrying for taxpayers will be the 5% surcharge which is automatically levied on the unpaid 2004/05 taxes still outstanding at 28 February 2006.

IR? Arseholes.

Firstly, thanks for letting all the crims have our addresses (I used to work for Network Rail) so someone can try and do a fraudulent tax credit in my name.

Secondly your ing smug website always thinks it's going to be us that owe you.

Well NO!! RETARDS! In my last two years returns and the missus last one IR has had to pay us back.

Owing to accountant incompetence I got hit with £21K last year that I wasn't expecting.

Not so much as an apology from them.

People who pay Self Assessment tax are not necessarilly the wealthiest individuals at all and do not necessarilly pay "more" tax than anyone else. Indeed, many of them are in a position to "box clever" with their taxes - especially if they have a good accountant

I'm amazed at the number of people on PH who seem to have SA problems or appear to be paying all sorts of fines, penalties or interest.

What on earth are your accountants up to?

Those of us who do SA are not all self-employed, we can't all afford accountants.

I was hit with an SA 3 years in a row despite being a fairly ordinary PAYE earner.

However it did work out to my advantage as once I declared my charitable giving I got an improved tax code.

The IT are retards tho.

I had a company car from April to Sept one year, then I got rid of it, informed IR and they changed my code. However the next April they put my tax code back to one with the car, as I'd had a car the previous year. Retards.

Not all accountnats are that expensive (no names, no pack drill).

Paying £50 to have a "basic" PAYE related Self Assessment tax return sorted out may be the best £50 you ever spent (that might be an exaggeration by the way).

Any fee less than the £100 penalty is good value.

A couple of years ago I had to sort out a PAYE based SA tax bill(company cars again) which resulted in £6,000 additional tax due. There was no argument about the underpaid liability but I was able to negotiate a cancellation of all penalties and interest that the IR were planning on levying on my client.

Got mine filed yesterday. Thankfully some of the work I do is PAYE and taxed at source (at base rate on all of it meaning straight away I lose 22% of what I earn ) - whilst annoying at the time it means I get a manageable tax bill come January as I have already paid a lot of tax. More so with my wife - she often gets a rebate!

They did give me a laugh a while back - when I started out I was told I needn't file for my first part-year in business (98-99) as effectively I earned about 3k so was well under the tax threshold. Suddenly about 18 months ago they went mental with me and threatened all sorts of shite and told me to get it in in a week. Duly sorted - and they owed me 50 quid!

One thing that gets me is that for someone with fairly simple tax affairs, now that Gordy has closed virtually all the allowances that used to be claimed, it always seems that on SA the PAYE element is way out to the tune of a few hundred quid.

Maybe it is our pay office. Anyway just paid my final amount last week, £11.87.

Of course that assumes the IR accepts my electronic transmissions and receipts thereof.
