As I'm moving over to driving my 996 everyday. It has got me wondering how long most people allow their Porsches to warm up? It normally takes 20 mins on mine to reach 3.5 at 5000 rpm - sometimes frustrating when my journey to work only takes 10mins. Does everyone follow Porsches recommendation?

I try and do an oil measurement while I'm driving along. During warm up it'll tell me measurement not possible until engine warmed up. When it starts saying measurement not possible because vehicle not stopped I know it's warmed up. Normally takes about 10-20 minutes depending on if I'm on the motorway or titting about town.

What's warm? Oil or water? The check oil feature will still report cold engine when the water is at 80.

I also wait around 10-15 minutes - when idling I look to see that the oil pressure is hovering around 2 bar or less (GT3), and / or use the "check oil level" function as previously suggested.

Until the engine oil is warm, I stick pretty much to 3,000 rpm.

So I have to wait longer than water temp. reading say 40c? I would have thought that once the water temp was well off the stop , the bits needing oil would be getting enough to cope .. perhaps I'm assuming too much.

I'd have thought that after 5-10 minutes, the oil has had a decent chance to warm up and circulate and at that point is it OK to start increasing the revs - maybe up to 5,000, then after another 5-10minutes you should be OK using the full rev limit.

On the M3, the first few engine temperature guideline lights go out in less than 3 minutes, but I'm sure most M3 drivers take it easy until all the lights are extinguished which, depending on outside conditions, will probably be around 10mins.

What does the handbook say ?
