You should have 'backup' somewhere deep in your start menu, possibly in programs/accessories/system tools. If you step through the wizzard in this I think it gives you the option to back up to a file rather than tape, and to schedule the backup also.

If the files/folders in question are also on the server, and the spare disk is as big as the partition they're on, you could mirror one on to the other. Can be done from 'disk managment' and if one disk goes down the other will have identical contents right untill the last second. If it's your boot volume you can even boot off the other disk without the first one there, which is nice. But this won't save you from situations where for example you make a bad change to the document and save it, or accidentaly delete it cause the other disk will mirror the error as soon as it happens.

The backup tool in XP is only available on professional, not on home

I work for a backup company, feel free to email me if you need any questions answered, but I'd agree with the sync tool if it's just folders.

I use Cobian Backup 7, it just works away in the background and periodically (you set the schedule) copies the files over that you have selected. You can set it to overwrite all files everytime (slow) or just check for changes and only overwrite those files that have altered (quicker) and a few other options besides. Not used Synctoy so cannot comment but if it does not have scheduling built in then I would go for Cobian. The crash will always come when you have forgot to backup for a while otherwise.
