I have been looking for a winter car and come across a granada 2.0 ghia auto. Its an L reg with spaceship mileage and basically a cheapie to do winters.

as I wont be bothering to get this one serviced or anything, I am slightly nervous about gettting anything with an auto box. any thoughts?

also, how do I avoid my insurers screwing a second premium out of me? I have comp on the TVR but this would only allow me to drive vehicles owned by OTHERS on a TP basis. Because I use my 6 yrs No claims in the TVR, they would want £1k to insure the Grandada seperately, and thats TPFT!!!!!!!!!!

That insurance is madness!

Get a Vauxhall carlton manual from auction if you can. Prices start at 80 quid. My mates' had four of them. None have failed an MOT and only one has broken down, that was after he did about 50K miles in it in under a year!

Granadas are bad news. The same friend just bought one (auto) after scrapping his last carlton. He'd had it less than a month when the gearbox blew.

He's estimating £250 worth of damage.

Edited I can't do grammer because.

Try this thread it may help www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=21434&f=57&h=0 its about lay up insurance. If your not paying insurance on the TIV while its laid up, you will have the money to pay for the insurance on the Ford your thinking of buying.

You could take the policy out and cancel it after 6 months but you won't get half your premium back due to admitistration costs etc. I think think its cheaper that getting 6 months insurance.

I bought a 2.0 granny when I had a broken leg, blew up the diff, then a month later blew up the gearbox

This may have been down to driving style of course

Get a manual if you can

Have you got a wife/partner etc who could 'own' the car? Then you could drive it with their permission.

that would work but theyd have to insure it themselves TPO or something, as insurance on all cars only applies to cars with insurance themselves as (as far as i know) every car on the road must legally have its own insurance policy (or be on a traders policy or something)
