But in the eyes of the insurance companies, what qualifies as a kit car?

I mean you have the kits and turn keys that you can buy such as westfield, fisher, dutton, phantoms etc but whats the limit on changing the original specification of a standard car before it becomes classed as a kit car??

Is it as simple as a different body, suspension and engine or does it go beyond?

Something suck as a new body on it (like the MX5 Retroforza kit) means you can get kit car insurance, but I have found that it doesn't differ that much to quotes on a standard car, just a little bit cheaper.

I would imagine to get a "proper" kit car insurance quote (i.e. pretty cheap) you would have to have a car made by a recognized low volume kit car manufacturer that could be bought as a self build kit.
