There's an article in today's Standard Lite about restaurant hygiene standards, which mentions a number of restaurants in Chinatown.

I've been to several of those mentioned in the last few weeks and now I feel a bit

Couldn't find a link as yet, but here are a few choice quotes from the article:

"cockroach found on meat slicer"
"pigeons in rear corridors"
"mice droppings evident in food"

Enjoy your lunch!

Just like hong kong then, i had a cockroach drop from the ceiling on my arm once in a restuarant over there.

Wasn't exactly a "tourist" place though.

You are asking for a reaction from our Chinese fiends, I think.
You get these problems in eateries throughout the country (Indian, Chinese, Thai, Greek, etc.etc.)
I was once told that London's Chinatown is run by the Triads.
Whether it is true or not, I wouldn't want to upset them!

Not at all! I have a number of Chinese colleagues and they're all feeling a bit queasy too.

Of the 12 restaurants mentioned in the hall of shame, 7 are Chinese, of which I eat reasonably frequently at two and occasionally at one. I haven't eaten at any of the other restaurants mentioned....

And no, I don't want to upset the Triads

If you've been there and you're still OK then there is obviously nothing to worry about.

You could always take Raf Dug and his samurai sword with you for protection!

i used to go to the Loon Fung (above the Supermarket) and Joy King Lau every fortnight - they seemed quite hygienic and spartan, at least on appearances - were these on the list? - i'd be surprised.

I think many of the owners used to pay 'protection' money (or 'insurance for wiseguys' ala Goodfellas) to the Mafia - i'd imagine it may have been difficult to bring them to book for lack of witnesses.

The area in which Chinatown resides was never designed or built to house so many restaurants, hence the infrastructure cannot fully support the waste generated. Small, cramped kitchens with tiny outside basement spaces, the need to pile rubbish out front in the street and old - often badly maintained - buildings all conspire to create the ideal environment for vermin!

As a rule of thumb, don't eat in Chinatown! If you want a great (and authentic), Chinese meal then head to Hakkasan!

I can heartily recommend the Imperial Garden on Cornhill in the city. A bit steep but its an excellent restaurant

I read a couple of days ago that they are planning to start expanding China Town to about twice it's current size (can't remember *where* I read it though ). Can't actually see where they are going to expand it to....does anyone know?

If anyone wants a cheap, quick lunch or fab Chinese cakes, Kowloon on Gerrard Street rocks
