....gear lever / handbrake leather gaiter on a SE ?
The lever / linkage is rattling which can be cured by pulling upwards slightly on the gear lever so I'm guessing bushes need replacing which previous threads have indicated can be done from the top but I can't see how you get in there.
Can anyone help ?

Assuming it's like my car:
Remove gearknob.
Remove the carpeted panel behind the seats (with the rolled top to prevent stuff falling off the shelf).
Dig out the trim panel from the bottom of the cubbyhole in the tunnel top. Peel back the vinyl and there's a screw holding the tunnel top down.
Remove the trim from around the radio console.
Wriggle the tunnel top cover backwards and upwards.
Eventually you can work the piece of hardboard with leather glued to it, over the handbrake and gearlever. On my car the hardboard's been cut in two to make it easier.
Now remove the gearlever rubber gaiter and get stuck in!
If it's the shift extension rubber mounts you want to change, it's easier from underneath!

Ian, thanks for that - the later SE dash is different and the centre tunnel trim is all in one with the centre dash trim and I can't see how it would come out. The gear lever / handbrake are covered by a single piece of leather, attached it appears to the underside of this central trim section and I don't want to push and prod too much in case something comes out I can't get back.
I have no idea what I actually need to replace - I have seen on posts mention of gear linkage bushes wearing - my gear lever rattles away in gears 1 to 4 according to revs and if I coast in neutral or pull it upwards it stops .
If you can actually get to this area from underneath I'll have a look at the weekend.

You can get to it from underneath although it is a little tricky and the fixings were very tight.
Both remote linkage mounting bushes worn allowing the casing to hit the propshaft uj. Got it just in time by the looks as there is a nice gouge on the casing and the uj shoulders have been worn circular.
Made up some new bushes from various rubber washers I had and also fitted two additional bushes on the top of the inverted U bracket that holds the linkage up - now's there 10mm of clearance. Will order correct replacement bushes and fit but cured it for now.
