Tragic Tale Of Jumpy Croc

A road traffic accident with a difference has hit the headlines in Australia's Northern Territory after a crocodile launched itself out of roadside ditch.

The 6.5ft saltwater beast jumped with all four feet off the ground, flying at a passing car and slamming head first into the side of the vehicle.

"The driver barely had time to respond and the crocodile became a road fatality," said Garry Linder, crocodile management officer at the Kakadu National Park in northern Australia.

Mr Linder explained that northern Australia is drenched by monsoon rains at this time of year.

He said it is therefore more common for crocodiles to move about looking for food and a place to bask.

But he was not convinced the animal was committing suicide, saying: "It was probably startled and it just leaped in the wrong direction once it heard the vehicle coming."

The incident is the latest in a series of reports of drivers being confronted by crocodiles in Kakadu and has prompted calls for Northern Territory residents to watch for the reptiles when driving near waterways.

The croc's body was given to Aborigines, who ate it.
