PS2 or dualshock2 broken?

recently dusted off my ps2 afer a lengthy period of non use. However, i cannot play any ps2 games - they either say that the dualshock isn't connected, or simply none of the controls work once the menu loads. I can however play ps1 games and some ps2 games with the older ps1 controllers.

is this likely to be a fault with the ps2 unit or the dualshock2 controller?

sounds like the old hyper algorythm incursion modulator has by-fluxed the conversion emulator when playing PS2 games

try an new pad?
