Can anyone explain why the BMW M1 has never been copied as a kit car as it seems it would be a great subject? better even than the oft copied Lamborghini Countach. Unlike the genuine Lambo the M1 had a fibre glass body with a steel frame chasis and there are many used BM's available for donor parts.
I remember there was one being developed but i believe BMW lawyers put a stop to it. If I find something in my archives I'll let you know.

I've found a picture of a car called Mystique in the February '86 issue of Kitcars and Specials, "inspired loosely by the BMW M1"

Ummm yes, I've thought of this before. Pity the real thing is still worth a LOT of money.
One of my fantasy projects would be to take an M1 and pop a V8 M5 engine into it. Although for ultimate wow there would be room for the BMW V10 M engine. Both would have MUCH more power than the orignal and less weight. There's plenty of brake options and the susp is all adjustable as well. Yummy.
For a few years I had a steering wheel..that was all.

Well I found a site in Germany that does a kind of M1 version but is not a true replica, it's built on a Matra shell.
