I'm currently leaning towards the Canon Ixus 55 @ £215 on Amazon.

Camera has to have at least 5MP, 3x Optical, 4x Digital, 2.5"LCD, MPEG capability, minimal shutter lag, look good!!

Anyone recommend anything else I should consider.

Good price but you must factor in an additional SD card, the 16MB card supplied only holds about 6 pictures at highest resolution.

Has video mode but I'm not sure of the format

I brought a black version from Bestcameras before Christmas and it has performed well and a lot better than the Sony Cybershot it replaced. Currently £219.98 with a 512Mb card from www.bestcameras.co.uk next day delivery and 2 year warranty.

just looked at the canon and the only drawback with the panasonic is there is no view finder, only the LCD screen for framing. editted to say I have not found it a problem yet!

That seems a very good price - I just checked tigerdirect.com for the same model as they tend to be very competitive on pricing and it's £265 there.

Just be aware that you're going to have to buy the incidentals as has already been said.

Now you've got me looking at cameras

I'm supposed to be sorting out this database!

www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1483717&CatId=0

There's a comparator for you to think of.

My mate heebeegeetee has just bought the sane camera ixus 55 impressive screen and sound. He bought through E bay from Hong Kong. Paid a total of £190 included spare battery and 1 gig sd card and £30.00 tax. ( you may be lucky and not get gripped for customs tax) Yopu could mail him off the board and ask his opinion on it. He spent a long time looking and did his homework before buying. He always seems to buy the right/good bits of kit ( MG Meastro excepted)
