Bizarrely enough I do know a blacksmith but I'm sure he wouldn't be interested in the job at the moment unfortunately.

How about these:

I thought you were kidding.

Your local Yellow Pages should have a section titled Blacksmiths & Forgemasters.

No I assumed since the demand for suits of armour, spears, swords and arrowheads has all but vanished so had that breed of craftsmen

Not true actually, there is healthy demand for all that stuff in the re-enactment scene. They like their stuff to be made the old fashioned way, not like the 'Lord of the Rings, Gandalf Sword' stuff you see on ebay.

Armourers generally cold-work steel, and anneal it afterwards to harden it (ie: heat it then quench it). Blacksmiths generally hot-work iron. So there is a difference, and the art of blacksmithing is still very much alive.

Kent, JimmyD.

I have googled all over the shop and the largest drop bolts I can find are 2ft long. We have huge doors to our barn that are about 10ft high, and I need some bolts for the tops, so they don't warp. Seeing as the longest I can find off the peg are 2ft I thought someone on here may be a Medieval armourer with time on their hands and could make em for me. Not hard to do - bit of metal bend to a nice whirly handle and some brackets for the bolt to run in...

Ah no, MM, won't work, as I don't really want to climb up a ladder every time I want to open or close the doors.

Hence extra long drop bolts...

Chain Bolt - Sprung loaded bolt - you pull the chain down (against the spring) to open the door.
Pull the chain you close the door, let go of chain and bolt shoots home

You can lengthen the chain as much as required
