CS spray man "Scarred for Life"
Discussion
A man sprayed in the face with a police CS canister may be permanently scarred by the burns and must avoid daylight for 12 months, say his family. Dan Ford, 21, of Wareham, Dorset, was sprayed when he tried to intervene as officers questioned a friend.
Dorset Police said Mr Ford, who has been charged with a public order offence, had suffered an unusually adverse reaction to the spray.
Mr Ford had been drinking with his sister Rachel and his cousin Donna Lewis when he saw a friend being questioned by police. He was among several people subsequently sprayed with CS, commonly known as "tear gas". Miss Lewis said the canister was sprayed close to Mr Ford's face in a long burst.
Miss Lewis, from Corfe Castle, said his face was swollen and red raw the next day. "To look at him, it was like looking at a melting man. "He was continuously mopping his face, with liquid oozing from his face.
"It was disgusting to look at and quite heartbreaking," she said.
Doctors at Salisbury District Hospital's specialist burns unit - where Mr Ford was treated - believe he will be scarred for life because the spray caused his skin to blister severely, say the family.
Mr Ford has been told he cannot go out in daylight for over a year, which means he cannot work.
His father is now considering launching a civil action against Dorset Police.
Adrian Whiting, assistant chief constable of Dorset Police, described Mr Ford's reaction to the spray as "unusually adverse".
He added: "We are committed to maintaining public safety, and occasionally we have had to make use of incapacitating sprays."
A Home Office spokesperson said: "The physical effects of the spray are unpleasant but its use can be justified where there is a risk of serious injury to the police or public

What, they have trouble in sleepy Corfe Castle. Quite amazing.
On a serious note, he should have been treated immediatly there was a problem. I suspect he had been left in the cell block and ignored! Maybe there was a problem with the cannisters contents but either way, once incarcerated the respopnsibility for his care rested with the police. Now he will probably have 3 years worth of arguments to get any compensation.

)You've got to wonder how much it was kicking off, I know plenty of policemen and they only use their CS as a last resort when it goes off as there is so much grief / paperwork to do when you have used it.
I would suggest we are not being told the whole story and the likelihood of the chap merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time is slim.

If the chaps method if 'intervening' meant giving the cops a good shoeing, then he deserved to have his face fall off. If, on the other hand, he was merely doing the old " don't arrest him, officer, he merely dropped some litter" then it was certainly heavy handed, and compensation need to be paid... We need to know what he did before judgment is given

That's the pic I saw. Whether he deserved CS or not, that's a bit wrong that, have a look, go on, I dare you.
I must say, I'd have rather received a bit of truncheon rash to be honest. Whats wrong with using a baton? Obvioulsy if CS spray causes such nasty burns, then it can't be used just for regular police use. Does that not make it some sort of nasty arse chemical weapon??? Dear god... Just imagine if that gets out... We'll be invaded by Dubya!

Well he should certainly receive compensation for this.
Why?
He was a danger to the police so was sprayed with the gas to restrain him. The police did not intend for him to receive those burns. If he had wanted to avoid the possibility of such an outcome he should have behaved himself.
Maybe he'll think twice before wading in next time - very few people seem to have considered the fact that the bloke probably got all he deserved.
Of course we could always take the option they have in other countries - shoot the buggers between the eyes.
I've never got myself into a major row with the police, & I've never been sprayed with CS gas, do you think thats just a coincidence?
Give it a few months & he'll probably be sitting pretty with his big fat compensation payout in the bank - poor sod.

Some Chav scum getting exactly what he deserved boo hoo. ![]()
And just because he can't go out in daylight, why can't he GET A JOB working nights?
Seconded here...
As Jaglover says if he had behaved himself and not have interfered with the police proceedings then he wouldn't have got sprayed.
It's just unfortunate that he has a reaction to the spray...
I can't think of any other cases of people reacting this badly to CS gas so i guess he is just unlucky and will have to get a job with a night shift somewhere like in a 24hr petrol station..
