Opened the bonnet to check the oil level and no oil cap ! Silly bast - i must have forgotten to put it back on the prev weekend. Anyway, i have have done about 200 miles with no cap in. I would have left it just next to the wiper motor on the n/s, but am suprised the bonnet closed to be honest !

Bad for engine? No oil on bonnet and plenty still in the engine.

Oh, and anyone have a spare one hanging around?

Shouldn't be a problems other than oil spats in the bonnet lining.

And Yes, I got an old one you can have.

Know anybody going to VW tomorrow? If so I'll take it along.

I wouldn't use the car until you get another cap if it were me.You *could* get dust or bits of debris, like leaf bits etc whilst running with no cap. It'll only take you a couple of days to get a new cap,but if you have to use it,then you need something like an oil soaked, lint free cloth, secured with a cable tie to cover it perhaps?

it also makes the engine run so much weeker! the breather pipe that goes from the nearside rocker that goes to the plenum and trumpet base will now be flowing fresh air through it rather than metered air!

Don't be tempted to stuff a rag in there

Any landrover place or rover garage will be able to flog you a new cap.

Cheers for the advice guys. Wont be using it till next weekend. Must say - i didnt notice any running or performance changes tho. Its getting an oil change in the next week or two anyway, so i'll just get a cap asap.

Big Al - is it an alluminium one or a standard Rover one?
