I was watching a programme on SKY the other night and this police patrol car mentioned that the guy in front driving a dodgy looking Mini Metro did not have any tax or insurance (he was checking on the computer in ther patrol car). The tax thing would be easy enough to look up on computer I suppose by checking with the DVLA but how can they check that the car has no insurance?

Surely there must be hundreds of insurance brokers / agents etc out there - are they all connected up now?

Supposedly, but the system is not always accurate.

PNC is linked into the national insurance data base. If the car has a policy covering it or the driver has a policy to cover the car or him/herself, it should be on the system. If it is not then the option of a producer is always available for the motorist concerned to produce cover within 7 or 5 days depending on the circs.

Its not the plod computer. Its a link through PNC to the national insurance data base. The finger should be pointed to those who input the data and not plod who just have access to whats on it.

Its of enormous use. It may not be perfect but what in the world is perfect (except for me according to my wife "listen to Mr perfect she often says )

In your son's case, the issue of a production form (miss100) or Hort1 as you would have previously known it would have been the solution to the problem.

If you check a car and there is no cover on the car and then check the driver and there is no cover on the driver, a simple question avoids all the hassle of chase up enquiries when you challenge them with the facts that there is no cover. Anyone who insists there is cover usually gets the producer. Most roll over straight away when you tell them and the incident can be dealt with there and then saving valuable time later!

Its not the brokers that update the MID (Motorists Insurer's Database)it is the insurance companies themselves. In theory it should be updated within 7 days of cover being effective, although where the policy has to have paperwork submitted manually, and not via EDi (Electronic Data Interchange) the 7 days sometimes get missed. Although about 95% of policies are processed on an EDI basis now, so there is not that many that would go over the 7 days.

The system also has problems when you pay for your insurance monthly. Certain Companies are not in the database too, i think.

They couldn't tell whether i was insured six months ago.

Paying monthly would not have any bearing on the MID, as you are issued with an annual cartificate anyway.
