Indicated speed

Can anyone tell me (on average) how accurate your speedo is?

The reason I ask is because I had an indicated 230 km/h in my girlfriends BMW 520i last weekend. Now the top speed for this car is supposed to be 211 km/h.

Take the rpm and multiply by the kmh per 1000rpm given in the handbook.

Speedos generally read up to 10% faster than actual speed.

Couple of easy speedo accuracy checks are: -

1. Time between motorway marker posts whilst travelling at a constant indicated speed. Say 60MPH or if you prefer 1 mile/minute and calculate the variance...easy!

2. Check your manual for mph/1000RPM. Say 25MPH/1000RPM. Drive along at 3000RPM and the speedo should indicate 75MPH...easy!

If you attach one of the GPS safety camera detector things, they tell you what your actual speed is. You can compare that reading with the one on your speedo.

Without wanting to sound really geeky, but I think it's actually a Mitsubishi Space Star or summat.

p.s. And why do all the bloody imported Previa MPV's have those rediculous rear parking mirrors on them. It's not like they ever use them...

Thanks, Deester, for reminding me that high speeds are not the exclusive preserve of the irresponsible devil worshipper.

The Brabus thing is amazing - what's that? 280 km/h = (approx) 280 x 5 / 8 = 175 mph!!!

The 520i is a truly amazing car - a guy at work recently exposed me to an amazingly composed but (I think) rung out 140 mph (indicated).

A fairly basic, family saloon, to boot. Actually, another mate's just got a new company car, an Audi 1.8T which is good for 144 mph - a bloody 1.8!

No his eyes are ok its "only" doing 195 kmh the graduations are 20 kmh and the highest is 240 next down is 220 and the needle is just below that 195

Edited to say thats "only" 120 mph
