Today I wanted to show some holiday photos people using their TV, as neither of us have a laptop. They lent me a Sandisk card reader jobbie that you can connect to a TV and shows images from a CF card in the front.

Thing was, my images were on the PC. So in a devil-may-care moment I connected the D70 to the PC and hoofed 250 images from the PC to the card. Seemed fine.

So I took the card reader and card over to their house, connected it all up to their TV and we successfully viewed about 160 images. Then it said: 'Cannot read file' and refused to go beyond that point.

Ho hum, it was worth a go. So as I don't need those images on the card any more, I format it in camera. Except it won't - it says 'Formatting' for about 30 seconds but nothing happens. I get the 'CHA' readout.

Never mind, thinks I, the PC will sort it out. I get home, connect the D70 back to the PC and investigate the card from there. There's a file on it called NIKON001.DSC and it's about 500Kb. Right, think I, I'll delete that critter and all be well. Except I can't delete it. Right, think I, I'll format the er from the PC. Except it won't, either in normal mode or quick format mode.

I investigate the file again and now it's only 1Kb, but it's bolloxing up my card.

Any advice folks?

As for the file, I have the same one (not sure what it does), but its size is 512BYTES or 1KB.....are you sure it shrank or are you looking at the wrong info?

This may indicate it is a standard file.

Have you tried formatting using the camera?

I belive it said both, first 512b then 1Kb. But a formatted card should be empty, no?

Sorry missed that bit

512b will show as 1kb though hence the question.

Ok, so to test for you ........formatted in a card reader shows no files, formatting in cam' (D70) leaves a folder called 'DCIM' plus 'NIKON001.DSC' sizes as before. From this I don't believe the file is the problem as it seems a standard file The cam' writes.

Is there the possibility of trying to format in a card reader connected to the pc?

Other than that ummm errrrrr....I'm thinking but the vino is starting to take over.

Cheers,
Steve

Remebered I have a Lexar Jumpshot card reader, so tried that. No progress, but it allowed me to run tests and e-mail the results to Lexar, so we'll see what they say.

Sunday: Got very fast reply saying to format from PC using FAT (not FAT32). Didn't work. Next episode to follow

A formatted card will never show the full amount of space, all my cards show as being a tad under the stated amount.

Now that the card has been tweaked in windows, will the camera format it and allow you to take pictures on it, or do you still get the error screen?

Probably easiest to quote correspondence with Lexar:

Image Rescue Technical Support Request:

Problem description:

Put card in camera (Nikon D70) and transferred approx 250 JPG images for use in Sandisk card reader connected to TV.

After 160 successful images on TV, I got 'Cannot read card' message.

Cannot format card in camera - tries for 30 secs but does nothing.

PC shows that the card has 1Kb file called NIKON001.DCS which won't delete. Won't format from PC either.

Have run Lexar Image Recovery software (Test card and Format). Test card shows OK, Format doesn't work.

Please advise!

To resolve this issue please format the card using the card reader by the following steps:

· Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
· Using My Computer, identify the Card drive letter.
· Left-click the Card icon to highlight it and then right-click it.
· On the pop-up menu select Format.
· At the Format - Removable Disk (x) screen select Full format, format in 'fat' file system.
· Click Start. The Format Results - Removable Drive (x screen appears
· Click Close.

Now, after formatting please try to use the card back in your camera and check whether it is detected. If this doesn’t work try to format the card in another camera. If still, this issue persists then kindly get back to us with the exact error message and also manufacturer of the card and its capacity, speed of the card. Also try with some other card in the camera as well as in the card reader.

Kindly get back to us if you have any issue.

Thanks for the quick answer. However, although I chose 'FAT' this time, I got the same result.

· Click Start. The Format Results - Removable Drive (x screen appears

No, a message said 'Windows was unable to complete the format'. If I place the card in the camera, the LCD says [ ] (ie nothing). If I press Play it says 'This card cannot be used'.

Well I'd still like to get it resolved, but I've just got a 2Gb Lexar Pro 40x new from eBay for £61, so the panic is over.

Finally dawned on me to mention it to the supplier.

So despite the card being bought in May 2004, next week I'll have a 1Gb 80x replacement free
