Hi there,

I've spent the weekend replacing the discs and pads on my AX GT. I noticed one of the sliding calipers was seized but I managed to get it moving again and I cleaned and greased it, (although it still needed a hefty pull to make it slide afterwards).

I had difficulty getting the new pads and discs in, i spent a lot of time with a 19mm spanner trying to lever the piston back into the bore just a little bit more. Eventually I removed the front of the caliper and re-assembled it around the new discs and pads, but this meant the pads were clamped to the disc quite firmly and the car wouldn't role. A few pumps of the brake pedal freed it up a lot but not totally.

After a test drive there is a slight smell of burning rubber if you sniff around the wheel, the car will role but needs a good push and it's obvious the disc isn't spinning freely. The disc is hot, but i wouldn't say its obviously too hot, i can touch it very tentatively with my finger.

I noticed the discs were tacky when they came out of the box - should I have cleaned them with some kind of solvent? Will the problem rectify itself with a 100 miles or so? Or will the discs be blue before then?

Any advice would much appreciated.

You should have degreased the discs with brake cleaner, and also cleaned the caked on brake dust from the outside of the caliper to ensure the pads are free to move. But if the slider isn't moving freely then all the other problems pale into insignificance. If you're cleaned and degreased the sliders and they are still not moving freely then you may need to replace them.

I see, i did clean all the brake dust out of the calipers, i should have cleaned the disc in the way you suggested as well - It seems all too obvious now. Anyway, having looked at the car again now everything's cool, the disc rotates freely. The 'tackyness' i mentioned has been cleaned off by my nice new pads (not ideal i know). I just hope the problem doesn't return when the discs heat up.

Thanks again GreenV8S, your post in November regarding the disc retaining screw that had snapped off somebody elses car was also a big help. I had exactly the same problem, and after drilling the thing out, took your advice - its not that big a deal, the wheel nuts hold it in place.

Cheers.
