A leap of faith on the tuning front
Discussion
I have taken the Griff to a West Sussex tuner for Cam, Trumpets, Injectors AFM and Remap. Should really have attempted the work myself but have completely failed to muster sufficient enthusiasm to spend time getting all cold and oily.
As the project progresses I will report how things go and what the results are. Currently the car starts and runs OK, ticks over nicely. The timing gear has become a bit clattery when hot and it seems a bit lacking in performance compared to another Griff I tried. I have asked for something that is not an undriveable monster, I want lots of torque and a bit more power at the top end as it seems to run out of steam quite early. Basically I am looking for something that goes at least as well as it should have done originally or a bit better would be a bonus.
I make this post because I suspect there a fair few people trying to decide which of the various tuning routes to go down, so the results, good or bad may be of interest.

Sadly not. An earlier attempt to measure it on the rollers was abandoned because it was pinking. I just know it felt sluggish compared to another 500, both in acceleration and also at what point it runs out of puff. One set of measures I do have are the 64ft, first split and speed trap at the local hill climb. I have a lot of data gathered over the last couple of years to make a comparison against.
Arguably these are better measurements than those made on a dyno as they are real world.

Take your point about the dyno and it's limitations, just thinking in terms of comparison.
Before I bought my Griff I owned a turbo charged Ford for 12 years and I did a lot of development on that engine and always used the same rollers (Noble Motorsport @ Chesterfield) it was interesting to watch the changes not just in power and torque but also in the way that the delivery in these peramiters changed.
The other bonus was in being able to make sure that the full load fueling was correct so that I could be sure that the engine was a "safe" as possible when I was playing on track, probably more important with a turbo charged car.
Good luck, will be interested to hear how you go on.
Colin.

Drove it about 50miles and stopped for about an hour. After that it started but I was aware that it needed more than the normal amount of cranking to pick up. At this point it seemed more difficult on a light throttle and didn't seem at all happy below 2500rpm, above that it still pulled well, although I was taking it easy as it was snowing, the oil pressure and temperature were normal. I drove another 40 miles and stopped for another hour or so. This time it was a lot more reluctant to start, turning over quickly but appearing to catch on just one or two cylinders, eventually it did start but the tick over was rough and driving in traffic quite difficult. Made it the two miles home, stopped briefly to open the gates and it then just turned over but refused to fire. Later I tried it and again, it turned over, seemed to fire once and then came to an abbrupt stop, there is a smell of fuel around the engine but no visible leak.
Really don’t want to say much about my car at the moment so as not to prejudice what I may need to do, suffice to say I am not ever so happy.
The important point I am making is before going down this route be certain you understand exactly what you are doing and explain very simply, in writing what you want to achieve.

Sorry to hear about your problems steve and i hope all gets resolved, in some respect though as it my business tuning peoples cars, if there is any way you could say what has gone wrong as opposed to just saying dont tune your car? i dont mean tell us who did the work just what your not happy with?
Yes, OK I see your point, tar and brush and all that. However my feeling at this point is I wish I had left alone. I am certain that others are very happy with their mods, I also know that some are not because they have contacted me directly to say so.
In simple terms :-
Had a car that went reasonably well, just wanted a bit more. Spent quite a lot of money and drove home a car that became more and more shunty on light throttle and then broke completely before I could get it in the drive. It went away on a lorry and came back partly assembled with fresh scratches. Drove it for about 10 miles and the crank broke. The “tuner” is very apologetic and hopefully I will eventually end up something I can be happy with in the end, just a bit grumpy at the moment.
