Selling Vehicle + Transfering Plate
Discussion
Hello,
I'm selling my car but transfering the plate off at the same time.
I need to fill in a V778/1 and send away the V5 which may take upto 6 weeks to arrive back with the new vehicle index printed on it.
The DVLA strongly advise not to sell your car during this interim period but also said I wound't be breaking the law if I did so. Just that I'd still be the registered keeper, so still responsible for fines etc if any are incurred by the new owner.
Obviously neither myself nor the buyer want to hang around for 6 weeks. Would a simple signed, witnessed document suffice outlining that the new owner would be responsibile for the car in this interim period?
Also, do I need to send my MOT certificate away with the V778/1 - has anyone done this before - just thinking the new owner would need this to arrange insurance which would be tricky if I send it away with the V778/1. Would a copy be enough to get insurance?
Any help much appreciated.

I recently did the same thing although i waited for the log book to come back with the new details on before i sold the original car, im sure that they told me something along the lines of if i had applied to transfer the plate and change owner the new owner would be able to refuse to part with the private plate if they so desired?
dont know if this is correct? but the thought of getting a ticket through the post after i'd sold the car then all the hassle it would cause put me off so i just parked it until the new log book came back. only took three weeks for me

I have just done this and whilst the quoted time is 6 weeks I had everything back including V5 with 10 days. Yes you do have to send in you MOT certifciate. You can do it all at time of sale, just get purchaser to sign a declaration that he agrees that plates will be transferred back into your name prior to sale. At which point I think you send the V5 along with V778 and another form (not sure which) with new drivers details such that your plate gets put onto retention in your name, he is issued with another plate and ownership of the vehicle with the new reg number and you keep your reg. Sounds more complicated than it is, but is just a few forms. If you cna get therough to DVLA (or DVLC not sure which one) they can talk you through it very quickly and esily, but good luck getting through!!!
Thanks for all the posts.
I've been to a DVLA office and sent off the V5, V778/1, the MOT certificate and the tax disk details.
I've been told that within 5 working days, I'll have back:
- a new MOT test certificate (with the new reg referenced)
- a new tax disk (with the new reg referenced)
- a New Keeper's section of the V5 which would enable me to sell the car
The full V5 should arrive a few weeks later which I need to send off again with the new owners details.
This all makes sense apart from the new keepers section sent back with the MOT/Tax disk. Surely this is duplicating the process when the new V5 arrives?
Cheers for any help.
