Need to buy a new hard drive, as one of the old ones just died out on me.. I'm looking for 300 to 400 Gb, sata or IDE is indifferent, best quality (ie, as unlikely to die as possible), price is not really the most important within reasonable (ie, not a £10000 drive )

Any advice appreciated

The best at the moment are a pair of 74GB Raptors set up in RAID 0 config. This is perfect for the OS drive.
Add a 250GB (or 2) Maxtor hard drives for the saving of important stuff (and music/films etc), and that's about the best set up for a normal home system. IMHO, of course.

Whats it for?

If its for recording video then Seagates SD35 is impossible to beat.

If its general computing I've never had any issue from the IBM/Hitachi range in any size.

Hi,

Its for "general use". Mostly backups/archives, nothing that requires huge speed. I'm much more interested in durability and reliability as they're on a PC that is on 24/7. It's not a bootup drive.

With this in mind, what is recommended?
