I was wondering if this would perhaps be useful for any events, (I took it to virginia waters but didn't get the opportunity to try it)... I have a "Race Technology DL1 race data logger" which will be used on the Elan I will race, but for now is not particularly being used and I am just messing around with.

It measures and logs all data on speed, lateral & longitudinal G, and other things I can't remember over a long period at very high data rates. I was thinking about the VMax event, whether this would be useful for people to run their cars with, then you can see the data, the speeds at each point, the acceleration, then overlay and compare this with data for other cars. It also obviously will give max speed etc (important for vmax I think!).

The software is very advanced for analysis and can also analyse 0-60 0-100 times, sector times etc. It is also more accurate than a simple GPS device as it combines the data from the built-in accelerometers as well as GPS to get much more accurate speed/positioning than just GPS.

The GPS allows it to know the route you take and draw a map of it, showing your speed, acceleration/deceleration and lateral G at each point. I drove around Cheltenham with it for 10 minutes, it was amusing to get back and see an exact map of my route together with speed at each point (a bit incriminating that one) and the G I was pulling on roundabouts. I think I did 1.2 G under braking.

Anyway, wondered if this was possibly useful for events and if I let people use it I could get some rides. Or if I'm just talking to myself.

The analysis software is freely downloadable so each person could spend ages on their own PC analysing their performance. The device requires no fixing and is swappable car-to-car in just a few seconds.

Russell..

Does the DL1 run off it's own power source or does it need a feed?

I ask the question as I'd love to get the figures for G's on the dragster!

Drop me a line off forum if you want..

cheers,

It comes with a cigarette lighter socket (bit bizarre given you plug it into a race car?), I guess you can buy an adapter with terminals to connect it to a battery.. But no it doesn't have its own battery. So you would need a small 12v job if you run without one.

It measures spark, rpm, engine temp etc if you wire it up right (or buy the right sensors); I could imagine it could well be useful to analyse those short drag runs in good detail?

OK so this was me on the way to work this morning:

As you can see, I did a 360 round that roundabout ().

My car is the circle with the line sticking out (the line indicates the G you are pulling and in which direction) and the long winding line is my route.. at this particular point my car is on the roundabout, I'm doing about 57mph, pulling 0.57 G to the left, accelerating slightly.

I haven't worked out how the 'power output' calculation bit works yet?

Max G for the run was 0.75 lateral, and 0.77 G when braking

geeky.

Going to try the same route in my other car and see what I get
