I was on holiday last week and had to leave my taxed, insured, moted, perfectly legal car at a friends house. I parked it in front of the next door neighbours house, legally, not blocking driveways etc. and gave my friends housemates the keys so they could move it if the neighbours were uppity.

Came back to find a cardboard handwritten 'police aware, please remove your car' placed on it by the neighbours, who hadnt even checked with their next door neighbours. If they did contact the police I hope they got told in no uncertain terms where to go.

Rant over.

Some people get really, really ratty about people parking in 'their' space outside their home. I can understand the sentiment, I guess the neighbours hadn't the common sense to ask around.

The space outside their house is public property. Plod would have told them so.

Could have been worse. I bought a Saab 900 a few years ago that had DONT PARK HERE in 6 inch high letters scratched along the passenger door and rear wing (obviously the price I paid for the car was adjusted to take account of this).

I think so too. I think they either didnt ring, or if they did they got told that, and thus cleverly worded their note, not to tell lies, but not quite to tell the truth...

If it still annoys you, and you have the inclination and time, I would post the note back through thier door with the back of it saying:

Please do not tamper with my vehicle on the public highway. Police aware.

Then go home and have a beer and forget about it!

If that aint enough, and you are *really* bored, go and find yourself the cheapest car on Autotrader with an MOT and valid Tax and go and park it in the same spot and leave it there until the tax runs out.

For added benefit, go back weekly to prove that you are actually using the car by waxing it and 'rubbing it in'. Hours of fun.

I would have written underneath it "WHY NOT?"

Done that but with a Mercedes 709 lwb van (25 foot long and approx 9 foot high!). Had nothing but hassle from non car owning neighbours complaining about cars being parked outside their houses and constantly complaining to the council about ficticious problems. Finaly lost the plot and bought the most unappealing builders van I could find with 12 months t&t on it and promptly parked it outside the main protagonists house. Suffice to say they lacked any form of natural light till the tax ran out 12 months later . Funnily enough there hasn't been a single complaint lodged since
