I have just spent five days in Germany, and my GF and I were out in the r turbo for a little while on saturday. She was actually the driver(dont worry she is superb, as i am not insured) however there was a problem that we have found in 5th gear whilst we were on the 'bahn.

So imagine, a clear stretch of autobahn, we slow to about 3,000rpm in 4th and then she nails it. Shifts perfectly at around 6800rpm, when she shifts however the boost goes from 1.1/1.2 to 1.4! I have never seen this before (i have only ever seen 1.3 on rare occasions in 6th gear at low rpms) When 5th is engaged boost is only at 0.6 bar.

So we slow down, and try 5th again, this time it comes back to 1.1 no problem and screams across the rpms. So we slow down and try again, this time the boost is limited to only 0.6 again!

I also noticed that the water temp was unusually low, a little below the 80 mark when it is normally a little above. However it moved back after about 5mins.

The weather was very cold too.

Any thoughts before we send it to ruf for a check up?

and here are some of the pics we took on saturday around the pfaffenhausen region, enjoy:

Knackered waste gate leading to overboost, and then perhaps sticking open leading to underboost?

Obviously you need to get it sorted as running overboost is not good for engine longetivity.

p.s. lovely car. Have you got the Ruf alloys hidden away somewhere too?

You'll all probably hate me for saying this, but it looks so much better on those wheels.

Actually in the snow pic the ground was incredibly icey. And the r turbo reversed up the hill really well. It was slipping but then the PSM would come in and the car would just grip and go up, really impressed.

I am thinking the same too, they are a heck of a lot lighter too, so maybe we will keep them on and fit some continental sport contact 2's on them in March...

Hi Adamt, sorry to here about your problems with the Ruff.
When you send it to be fixed, will you ask them for a few
extra 'bhp's ?....Also Iam very impressed your ins'
co,will cover your girlfriend but not you, maybe they think you
do not have enough experiance driving powerfull cars..
...

Regards Mark.

I'm far from an expert, but it does seem a little like wastegate control issues. If the ECU limits boost to 0.6 bar in fifth, it would use the wastegate to limit it. If the wastegate sticks open slightly then the Turbos will spool higher unhindered, hence 1.4 bar, instead of the 0.6 the ECU dictates. Maybe it was the cold weather causing a problem.

If it does it again I'd get it in for a healthcheck just to prevent potential engine damage occurring (from lean running, overworked turbos etc.).

Do you have links to the photos and report you did on the build history of the car? Maybe of interest to those who weren't around when you originally posted the link.
