I got talking to a girl today, who (so she said) in her spare time is a professional competition winner

How does that work then I asked

She said she doesnt have time for sitting down writing slogans at her desk as some of the pro's do, so thinks up slogans in her "routine time" ie whilst washing dishes, or doing whatever women do around the house (women like carrera2's cleaner exempt of course ).

She says she has won over 600 prizes, luxary holidays to New York, Lapland, Australia, european breaks, the world cup final, Disney world(twice!) and most of them are not "cheap holidays" either, they are often 5 star all expenses paid holidays, sometimes costing as much as £6000!

She said she lost count of the number of times she won the smaller "years supply of" competitions, jelly babies, washing powder, beer(!) and has won every gadget going... from washing machines and expensive household appliances to camcorders, mp3 players, stereos etc etc.

She said she doesnt quite make enough money to make a living out of it (but wouldnt want to do it fulltime anyway) but... she does have friends who have won as many as 5 brand new cars

Im sure PHers will debunk the myth of it being as easy as she made it sound.

Anyone ever won anything worth mentioning?

Yes, they do exist. You buy every magazine, enter everything, and try to get good at 'I like Doggychox because...'

All I've ever won is a big bag of nothing.

Your friend sounds like my Uncle. He must win two competitions a month. A week in a 5 star hotel. Flight to Dublin. XK8 for a weekend. Cornflakes for a year etc.

As he says, you gotta be in it to win it...

Some people have special techniques to improve their chance of winning like posting a huge radioactive yellow envelope to increase the chances of it being pulled out a sack.

Nice!

Ive got one... How could I forget

One summer, I was working in the kitchen in an old age home helping out with meals (my mom was a nurse there) and they had a raffle.

I think the staff and residents families chipped in and purchased the booze themselves. The dopehead who put together the booze raffle engineered it so that one in five tickets won a prize.

Tickets cost 10p iirc. It was about the spirit of the event. Most of the wheelchair bound residents were content with eachothers company, I kinda forgot about the "spirit of the event" side of things, and was asked to stop buying tickets when, after spending a couple of quid, had won half the bottles. I had so much alcohol I couldnt carry it away by myself

She said she reads an insider magazine, and usually steers clear of the free to enter competitions.

Usually, they ask you to buy the product first. So she does... A joint of meat, chapstick, whatever. Thats the catch. You are 3000 times more likely to win a competition if
a) your slogans are good, obviously
b) you are forced to buy a product to enter.

It costs her pounds a month in stamps/products, but she wins hundreds of pounds worth of stuff. As much as 10 prizes a month, on good months.

Although her friends have won cars, she has come second 9 times (I think she said 9 times ) and often walks away with £500, or whatever the second place prizes are
