Who is best at dials and data loggers for motorsport teams? It can be any team or any budget......
www.stackinc.com are a well known brand but others, such as www.piresearch.com are more technically sophistacted. Any opinions out there?

Depends on what you want to use it for. I've got RaceTechnology data loggers and dash. Both very good - appear unbreakable - very configurable and less than half the costs of the alternatives.

I'm sure that there is an advantage going the PI / Stack route, but I'd make sure that you need it before shelling out the extra cash

As Daydreamer says, It really depends on what information you want.
Do you want a dash displaying the usual revs, speed, preesures & temps.
Or do you want a data aquisition system to analyze chassis and driver dynamics. Sounds great in the bar, but probably not worth the expense, unless you have the skill to interpret the info or want to hire me for the day.

Personally I beleive 2d is at the top, used by most of the top moto gp teams, very lightweight.
Although our Uni have just been given a Tag 400 ECU/data aquisition unit from McLaren Elecs. It is an ECU with twin wideband lambda, self mapping capability, switchable maps, traction control etc etc and also 18 channel data aquisition built in. Fits in a box 143mmx104mmx30mm and weighs in at a mighty 560g!!!!

The mine field that is data loggers. Oh dear!

Basicaly it breaks down like this in UK motorsport.

Stack and Pi System 2 or above are as near as damn it the same in terms of basic use and value. It comes down to whether you want a traditional rev counter or digital Rev's as much as anything else despite what they might tell you. Pi Xpress is Ok but not to be confused with the Pi System 2 which compares more favourably with stack. Motec are widely regarded as the top line but generally only worth the investment if your changing everything including your ECU over to motec.

The Race technology set up is more than adequate for 95% of competitors but adds nothing in terms of value to the car on resale. Unlike a Stack or Pi which are features others might not have but most want. Alternatively you can remove the logger to and put it in your next car so its long term investment.

It boils down to knowing exactly what peramiters you want on your logger and then hit all the retailers for a quote on the same thing. They will all return with slightly different alternatives and prices to what you asked for just to confuse maters, then it comes down to how much the looks and brand name is worth to you and your specific situation.

One last thing, it takes alot longer (at least a full day) to fit a proper logger where as the GPS systems are much easier, so bare that in mind if your having a team fit it.

Hope that helps.

Having used Motec for the first time last year I can't recommend it highly enough. Brilliant, totally reliable and very user-friendly for both data analysis and dash/system set-up. PI is pretty good, but Motec is superb.

It might not be worth the expense though, depending on what you're using it for.
